Mrs. Hughes was a native of Carter County and the daughter of the late Sam and Nola "Maw" Manning. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by a sister, Willa Mae Campbell, and two brothers, George Manning and Bill Donnelly. Mrs. Hughes was a member of Brick Christian Church. She was retired from the Carter County School System after many years of service at Range Elementary School. Survivors include her husband of 60 years, Howard Hughes, of the home; a son, Charles Hughes, Elizabethton; two daughters, Susan Stephens, Mercer Island, Wash., and Betsy Winters, Elizabethton; three grandchildren, Travis Hughes, Elizabethton, Diana Michelle Bujan, Austin, Texas, and Katelyn Winters, Elizabethton; two brothers, Jack Manning and Paul Manning, both of Elizabethton; two sisters, Edna Donnelly and Elizabeth Hughes, both of Elizabethton; and many nieces and nephews. The funeral service for Mrs. Hughes will be conducted at 10 a.m. Wednesday, August 23, in the Chapel of Peace of Tetrick Funeral Home with Dr. Donald Marshall officiating. Music will be under the direction of Jane Walker and Greg Lacey. The graveside service and interment will follow the service at Colbaugh Cemetery. Active pallbearers will be Sam Stephens, John Hughes, Clarence Reed, Ted Colbaugh, Doug Smalling, Chuck Milam, Doug Rasnick and Robert Trent. Honorary pallbearers will be Dr. David Fenner, Mike Donnelly, Phil Hyder, Eddie Buckles, Dale Potter, Raymond Holtsclaw, David Harrison, her nephews, all members of Brick Christian Church, former and present faculty and staff of Range Elementary School and the many children who touched her heart. The family will receive friends in the funeral home chapel from 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday, August 22, or at the home, 189 Hart Road, at other times. The family would like to extend a special thank you for the loving care provided to Mrs. Hughes by the Johnson City Medical Center Hospice Services.
