A native of Carter County, he was a son of the late William Harrison and Celia Cable Hyder. Mr. Hyder was a retired employee of the U.S. Forestry Service in the Unicoi District. He was a World War II veteran and a 50-year member of the Roan Mountain Masonic Lodge #566. Mr. Hyder was a member of the Valley Forge Free Will Baptist Church. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Nell Davis Hyder, a grandson, Matthew Hyder, and by five sisters and brothers. Survivors include a daughter and son-in-law, Kathy and Stephen Harsh, Hampton; two sons and daughters-in-law, Myron and Wanda Hyder, Hampton, and Larry and Teresa Hyder, Unicoi; three granddaughters, Lindsay Harsh, Melanie Smith and Misty Bennett; three grandsons, David Hyder, Cecil "C.J." Hyder and Lance Harsh; two great-grandchildren, Kody Baucom and Jordon Smith; a brother, Gaylord Hyder, Hampton; two sisters, Joyce Cole, Hampton, and Collene Hicks, Johnson City; several nieces and nephews; and a very special niece, Shirl McKinney. Funeral services for Mr. Hyder will be conducted at 8 p.m. Sunday, March 9, at Memorial Funeral Chapel with the Rev. Dexter Brummitt and the Rev. Randy Johnson officiating. Music will be provided by Stanley and Roma Dean Hill. Graveside services and interment will be at 1 p.m. Monday, March 10, in the National Cemetery. Active pallbearers will be grandsons, Stephen Harsh, Hershel Scalf, Paul Vance and C.L. Woodby. The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home. Friends may also call at the residence of a daughter, Kathy Harsh, 122 Escape Mountain Road, Hampton. The family would like to express a special "thank you" to Dr. Wyche and Staff, his Ivy Hall Family, Dr. Jeff Farrow and his Valley Forge Free Will Baptist Church Family. "He had a smile on his face as he was being ushered into the presence of his Lord." Family and friends will assemble at the funeral home at 12:15 p.m. Monday to go to the cemetery.
