CARTER COUNTY, TN - OBITUARIES - Luther F. Hammitt, 20 Nov 2003 ----¤¤¤---- Luther F. Hammitt Luther F. Hammitt, 83, Southview Circle, Elizabethton, died Thursday, November 20, 2003, at Sycamore Shoals Hospital following an extended illness. Mr. Hammitt was a native of Carter County and the son of George and Eva Glover Hammitt. He was also preceded in death by two sisters, Mary Hammitt and Dolly Davenport. Mr. Hammitt was a member of Sims Hill Christian Church and a retired employee from North American Rayon Corporation. Survivors include his wife of 57 years, Betty Shipley Hammitt, of the home; two daughters and sons-in-law, Eva and Dickie Jones, Piney Flats, and Diane and Fred Vance, Bluff City; a son and daughter-in-law, John L. and Mary Hammitt, Elizabethton; two brothers and sisters-in-law, George and Margaret Hammitt and Archie and Jean Hammitt, all of Elizabethton; seven grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. The funeral service will be conducted at 3 p.m. Sunday, November 23, in the Chapel of Peace of Tetrick Funeral Home with Mr. Gerald Holly and Mr. Rocky Maines officiating. Music will be under the direction of Gerald and Gloria Holly. The family will receive friends at the funeral home from 1:30 to 3 p.m. Sunday, prior to the service. Friends may also call at the residence, 307B Southview Circle, Elizabethton, at any time. The graveside and interment will be conducted at 11 a.m. Tuesday, November 25, at Mountain Home National Cemetery. Military Honors will be accorded by the Captain Lynn H. Folsom VFW Post No. 2166. Active pallbearers will be grandsons and grandsons-in-law. Honorary pallbearers will be the men of Sims Hill Christian Church and friends and neighbors. Thank you to the doctors and nursing staff at the James H. Quillen VA Medical Center for the loving care and support shown to the Hammitt family and a special thank you to Dr. Gay Battle. Those who plan to attend the graveside service are asked to meet at the funeral home at 10 a.m. Tuesday to go in procession to the cemetery. Those who prefer memorials in lieu of flowers may make donations to Sims Hill Christian Church, 206 Sims Hill Road, Elizabethton, TN 37643.
