Hatley Walter Brown Hatley, 78, 3032 Highway 321, Hampton, died Wednesday, April 24, 2002, at Sycamore Shoals Hospital. Mr. Hatley was a native of Carter County and a son of the late Alvin and Minnie Arnold Hatley. He was also preceded in death by his wife, Velma Hatley, August 27, 2001, six brothers, a sister and a son-in-law, George Perry. Mr. Hatley was a graduate of The Watauga Academy and a retired employee of North American Rayon Corporation with 49 years of service. He was a Lifetime Member of the Carter County Rescue Squad. He was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II and a recipient of the Purple Heart. He was an Ex-POW and a member of the East Tennessee Chapter American Ex-Prisoners of War. He attended Fish Springs Baptist Church. Survivors include three daughters and a son-in-law, Faye and Bob Tester, Butler, Brenda Perry and Ethel Hatley, both of Elizabethton; two brothers, Beryl Hatley, Jonesborough, and Joe Hatley, Elizabethton; two sisters, Christine Payne and Dorothy Pearson, both of Butler; three grandchildren, Karen Hill, George Perry Jr. and his wife, Joyce, and Bobby Ray Tester and his wife, Heather; and three great-grandchildren, J.W. Tester, Alexandra Hill and Sierra Tester. Several nieces and nephews also survive. Memorial Funeral Chapel is in charge of arrangements. HATLEY -- Funeral services for Walter Brown Hatley, 78, 3032 Highway 321, Hampton, who died Wednesday, April 24, 2002, will be conducted at 8 p.m. Friday, April 26, at Memorial Funeral Chapel with the Rev. Nick Bradshaw officiating. Graveside services and interment will be conducted at 2 p.m. Saturday, April 27, at Lakeview Cemetery. Military Graveside Honors will be accorded by the Captain Lynn H. Folsom VFW Post #2166. Active pallbearers, who are requested to assemble at the cemetery at 1:55 p.m. Saturday, will be Dick Ward, Burl Campbell, Johnny Campbell, Ferrell Maines, Wally Isham, Paul Gryder, Dean Lunceford and Tony Griffey. Honorary pallbearers will be grandsons, David Griffey and men of the Butler Amoco Service Station, members and former members of the Carter County Rescue Squad and former employees of North American Rayon Corporation. The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Friday at the funeral home. Friends may also call at the residence of his daughters, Brenda Perry, 513 Holston Avenue, Elizabethton, or Faye Tester, 435 Tester Lane, Butler.
