Hazelwood Mrs. Nelle Gertrude Hazelwood, 94, 123 Oscar Johnson Road, Hampton, died Thursday, May 30, 2002, at Sycamore Shoals Hospital. Mrs. Hazelwood was a native of Carter County and a daughter of the late Oscar P. and Lorina Katherine Morton Smith. She was also preceded in death by her husband, Edward S. Hazelwood; a daughter, Fern Simerly, April 10, 2002; three brothers, Albert, John and Paul Smith; three sisters, Bell Ivester, Grace Pierce and Pamela Hauk; and a grandson. Mrs. Hazelwood was a member of Union Baptist Church. Survivors include four daughters, Betty Estep, Dorothy Hazelwood and Cordia "Tootsie" Berry, all of Hampton, and Polly Grindstaff, Elizabethton; a son, Carl L. Hazelwood, Hampton; and a sister, Pauline Lewis, Elizabethton. Sixteen grandchildren, 14 great-grandchildren, six great-great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews also survive. Memorial Funeral Chapel is in charge of arrangements. HAZELWOOD -- Funeral services for Mrs. Nelle Gertrude Hazelwood, 94, 123 Oscar Johnson Road, Hampton, who died Thursday, May 30, 2002, were conducted at 8:30 p.m. Saturday, June 1, at Memorial Funeral Chapel with the Rev. Mickey Beal and the Rev. Haskel Ingram officiating. Music was provided by Ann Hazelwood Stepp. Graveside services and interment will be conducted at 2 p.m. Sunday, June 2, in the Morton-Cave Hill Cemetery. Active pallbearers will be grandsons. Honorary pallbearers will be George Hazelwood, Donnie Carden, Paul Stalcup, Bill Stalcup, Lester Smith, Phillip Hilman Jr., Bobby Ray James, Chris Lambert and Harry Gregg. The family received friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Saturday at the funeral home. Friends may also call at the residence of any of the children. Family and friends will assemble at the cemetery at 1:55 p.m. Sunday. Memorial Funeral Chapel is in charge of arrangements.
