CARTER COUNTY, TN - OBITUARIES - Vernie Holtsclaw Hughes, 5 Jul 2003 ----¤¤¤---- Vernie H. Hughes Vernie Holtsclaw Hughes, 95, Cove Creek Road, Roan Mountain, died Saturday, July 5, 2003, at her residence following an extended illness. Mrs. Hughes was a native of Carter County and the daughter of the late Weaver and Ethel Johnson Holtsclaw. She was also preceded in death by her husband, Tom Hughes, a son, Ralph Hughes, and by several brothers and sisters. Mrs. Hughes was a homemaker and a member of Burbank Free Will Baptist Church. Survivors include four grandchildren, Rocky Hughes and Randall Hughes, both of Elizabethton, Richard Hughes and spouse, Maradell Hughes, Roan Mountain, who were her caregivers, and Ruth Smith, Newland, N.C.; four great-grandchildren, Corey Hughes, Alex Hughes and Josh Hughes, all of Elizabethton, and Desiray Smith, Newland, N.C.; three sisters, Beulah Hughes, Onzie Johnson and Rena Lee Whitehead, all of Roan Mountain; and a brother, Carmel Holtsclaw, Roan Mountain. Several nieces and nephews also survive. Tetrick Funeral Home, Roan Mountain, (423) 772-3928, is in charge of arrangements. HUGHES -- Funeral services for Vernie Holtsclaw Hughes, 95, Cove Creek Road, Roan Mountain, who died Saturday, July 5, 2003, will be conducted at 7 p.m. Sunday, July 6, in the Rhododendron Chapel of Tetrick Funeral Home, Roan Mountain, with the Rev. Johnny Vance officiating. Music will be under the direction of the Burbank Free Will Baptist Church Quartet. The family will receive friends at the Rhododendron Chapel from 6 to 7 p.m. Sunday, prior to the service. Graveside services and interment will be at 11 a.m. Monday, July 7, in the Roberts Cemetery. Active pallbearers will be selected from family and friends. Those who plan to attend the g raveside service are asked to meet at the cemetery at 10:55 a.m. Monday.
