CARTER COUNTY, TN - OBITUARIES - Dave G. Hughes, 22 Dec 2003 ----¤¤¤---- Dave G. Hughes, 93, Roan Highlands Nursing Center, formerly of Dave Hughes Road, Roan Mountain, died Monday, December 22, 2003, at Cannon Memorial Hospital, Linville, N.C., following a brief illness. Mr. Hughes was a native of Carter County and the son of the late Henry and Mary Ellen Hopson Hughes. He was also preceded in death by a son, Warfield Hughes, two sisters, Birdie Hughes and Florence Bateman, and two brothers, Pierce Hughes and Jim Hughes. Mr. Hughes was a retired employee of the Carter County Highway Department and a member of Lower Shell Creek Christian Church. Survivors include his wife, Osma Honeycutt Hughes, Roan Highlands Nursing Center; three daughters and sons-in-law, Eloise and Bill Birchfield, Roan Mountain, Wanda and Rev. Richard Blevins, Johnson City, and Brenda and Ed Cook, Elk Park, N.C.; and eight grandchildren, Randy Birchfield, Roan Mountain, Matt Birchfield, Elizabethton, Michelle Holly, Elizabethton, Nicole Hughes, Roan Mountain, Kim Johnson, Crossnore, N.C., David Cook, Cranberry, N.C., Marci Bailey, Hampton, and Mark Blevins, Gray. Eight great-grandchildren, several nieces and nephews and a host of friends also survive. The funeral service will be conducted at 8 p.m. Tuesday, December 23, in the Rhododendron Chapel of Tetrick Funeral Home, Roan Mountain, with Mr. Gerald Holly and Mr. Donald Kirby, ministers, officiating. Music will be under the direction of Gloria and Gerald Holly. The graveside service and interment will be conducted at 11 a.m. Wednesday, December 24, at Dave Hughes Cemetery, Roan Mountain. Active pallbearers will be Randy Birchfield, Matt Birchfield, David Cook, Michael Johnson, Jeremy Holly, Mark Blevins and Gary Bailey. Honorary pallbearers will be the Nursing Staff of Roan Highlands Nursing Center, Dr. David Kimmel, Dr. Alfred Earwood and Rev. Tull Oaks. Those who plan to attend the graveside service are asked to meet at the cemetery at 10:55 a.m. Wednesday. The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday in the Rhododendron Chapel.
