Johnson Jr. COLUMBIA -- William O. Johnson Jr., 76, died Monday, April 3, 2006, in Memphis. Mr. Johnson was born in Hampton, Tenn., the son of Corine Lewis and William O. Johnson Sr. After graduating from Hampton High School, he earned bachelor's and master's degrees from East Tennessee State University. A veteran of the Korean War, he served in the Counter Intelligence Corps of the U.S. Army. Mr. Johnson began his career in education as a middle school teacher in Lakeland, Fla. He was the first director of admissions and college records appointed by the State of Tennessee on April 1, 1966, for the Community College System of Tennessee as Columbia State Community College's first Director of Admissions and Records. During his tenure at Columbia State, he introduced technology for the registration and admissions process and was responsible for putting all student records on the computer system. He obtained federal approval for Columbia State to enroll international students. He also served as the college's Veteran's Administration contact for enrolling veterans. Mr. Johnson retired from Columbia State in 1992. On January 30, 1997, the original admissions and records office located in the Pryor Administration Building was named in honor of Mr. Johnson. Mr. Johnson served as president of the Columbia Rotary Club and was named a Paul Harris Fellow. He was heavily involved in raising funds for Rotary's PolioPlus program. He was also involved with Habitat for Humanity before his illness. He was preceded in death by his older brother, the Reverend Eugene Johnson. He is survived by his loving wife of 34 years, Mollie Babcock Johnson; three children, Sarah Lindemann of Collierville, Wendy Rotter of Memphis, and Guy Tallent of Maplewood, N.J.; one brother, Stanford Johnson of Elizabethton; and six grandchildren. A visitation will be held in Columbia on Friday, April 7, from 3 to 5 p.m. at St. Peter's Episcopal Church Parish Hall.
