Johnson William Anderson "Ance" Johnson, 94, of Roan Mountain, passed away on Monday, June 11, 2007, at Sycamore Shoals Hospital following a brief illness. A native of Carter County, he was the son of the late Phebie Johnson Miller. In addition to his mother, he was preceded in death by his wife, Gladys June Hopson Johnson, and by three brothers and three sisters. Mr. Johnson was a member of Lower Shell Creek Christian Church. In 1977 he retired from the Power Plant of North American Rayon Corporation and then worked for the Carter County Highway Department. Mr. Johnson was a member of Dashiell Masonic Lodge #238, Jericho Shrine Temple, the Oriental Band and the Legion of Honor. He was a 32nd degree Mason and a York Rite Mason and belonged to the Eastern Star Chapter #230 of Roan Mountain. In 1984 and 1996 he was Shriner of the Year. He was a member of Captain Lynn H. Folsom VFW Post #2166 and a veteran of the U.S. Army, serving during World War II. Survivors include three sons and daughters-in-law, Larry G. and Jean Johnson of Roan Mountain, Mike and Trudy Johnson of Seattle, Wash., and Richard and Sissy Hopson of Kingsport; four grandchildren, Marti Johnson, Mikki Johnson, Keith Hopson and Holly Hopson; a sister, Dorothy Moody of Gray; a special nephew, Bill Miller and his family, wife, Ann, and daughter, Nikki Pullano, of Roan Mountain; and a special niece, Betty Settle of Beckley, W.Va. The funeral service for Mr. Johnson will be conducted at 7 p.m. Thursday, June 14, in the Rhododendron Chapel of Tetrick Funeral Home, Roan Mountain, with Rev. Jim Storie officiating. Music will be under the direction of David. Masonic Rites will be conducted by Roan Mountain Masonic Lodge #566. The graveside service and entombment will be conducted at 10 a.m. Friday, June 15, at Happy Valley Memorial Park, Mausoleum of Peace, with Military Honors accorded by the Captain Lynn H. Folsom VFW Post #2166. Honorary pallbearers will be Kenneth Lewis, Mark Lewis, J.L. Blackwell, C.J. Blackwell, David Blackwell, Jackie Blackwell, Roe Hodge and Conley Bullock. Those wishing to attend are asked to meet at the cemetery at 9:50 a.m. Friday. The family will receive friends in the funeral home chapel from 6 to 7 p.m. Thursday, prior to the service, and at other times at the residence of his son, Larry, 670 Buck Mountain Road, Roan Mountain. Those who prefer memorials in lieu of flowers may make donations to the Shriners' Children's Hospital, c/o Jericho Temple, P.O. Box 5548, Kingsport, TN 37663.
