Johnson Sr. Commodore Benjamin (C.B.) Johnson Sr., 88, 800 Jordan Road, Elizabethton, died Tuesday, September 26, 2000, at his residence following a brief illness. Mr. Johnson was a native of Avery County, N.C., and had made his home in Carter County since 1933. He was a son of the late Ivory Marvin and Nainie Cuthbertson Johnson and was also preceded in death by four brothers and four sisters. Mr. Johnson was a member of Crossnore Baptist Church but had attended Valley Forge Free Will Baptist Church for over 65 years. He was a retail merchant of C.B. Johnson's Friendly Home Furnishings in Elizabethton for over 38 years. He was Past President of the Carter County Chamber of Commerce, Past President of Carter County Community Chest, a 50-year member and Past Worshipful Master of Dashiell Masonic Lodge #238 F&AM, a 33deg. Mason, a York Rite and Scottish Rite Mason, a charter member of the Jericho Shrine Temple, and Past Dad Advisor for the Order of DeMolay. Mr. Johnson had conducted over 1100 Masonic funerals in East Tennessee and Western North Carolina for 26 different Masonic Lodges for a period of over 53 years. Survivors include his wife of 66 years, Mittie Belle Franklin Johnson, of the home; two sons and daughters-in-law, Ben E. and Carolyn Johnson, Elizabethton, and C.B. Jr. and Penny Johnson, Cashiers, N.C.; two daughters and sons-in-law, Bonnie and Norm Flynn, Loveland, Ohio, and Linda and George Hogan, Asheville, N.C.; three granddaughters, Jeana Swanson, Phillippi, W.Va., Brittany Johnson, Atlanta, Ga., and Mamie Hogan, Asheville, N.C.; six grandsons, Jeff and Joe Mink, both of Bristol, Va., Rev. Randy Johnson and Rick Johnson, both of Elizabethton, Matthew Ward, Charlotte, N.C., and Christopher Johnson, Atlanta, Ga.; 11 great- grandchildren; two brothers, Willie L. Johnson, Ruskin, Fla., and Cecil Johnson, Hudson, N.C.; and two sisters, Leoma Franklin, Elesmere, Del., and Marie Hathaway, Knoxville. Several nieces and nephews also survive. Johnson Sr., 88, 800 Jordan Road, Elizabethton, who died Tuesday, September 26, 2000, will be conducted at 8 p.m. Thursday, September 28, at Valley Forge Free Will Baptist Church with the Rev. Randy Johnson and Mr. Hugh Hatfield, minister, officiating. Music will be under the direction of his son, Ben E. Johnson, and his daughter, Bonnie Flynn. Graveside services and interment will be at 11:30 a.m. Friday, September 29, at Happy Valley Memorial Park with the Rev. D.C. Byrd officiating and Masonic Services conducted by Dashiell Masonic Lodge #238 F&AM. Active pallbearers will be Jeff Mink, Rev. Randy Johnson, Joe Mink, Rick Johnson, Matthew Ward, Christopher Johnson and Greg Swanson. Honorary pallbearers will be the Men's Bible Class, cooking buddies and all the men of Valley Forge Free Will Baptist Church, Jim Riddle and Ray Franklin, R.V. Brown, Don Tetrick, Jim Presnell, members of Dashiell Masonic Lodge #238 F&AM and all members of all Masonic bodies, all former members of the Order of DeMolay, Rev. D.C. Byrd, Rev. Darrell Dugger, Rev. Wayne Carr, Rev. Charlie Trivette, Rev. Raymond Whitehead and area ministers, former patients of the Shriner's Children's Hospital, Dr. Daniel Paul, Nurses and Staff of House Call Home Healthcare and House Call Hospice, Junella Hardin, Gilbert Hardin, Rev. Lester MacKinnon, a special sister-in-law, Mildred Vaughn, and special friends and neighbors. Everyone will meet at Valley Forge Free Will Baptist Church at 10:45 a.m. Friday to go in procession to the cemetery. The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday at Valley Forge Free Will Baptist Church. Friends may also call at the residence, 800 Jordan Road, Elizabethton, at any time.
