Markland George Edward "Ed" Markland, 86, 105 Meredith Drive, Elizabethton, died Saturday, Feb. 18, 2006, in Sycamore Shoals Hospital. A native of Carter County, he was a son of the late Charles David and Bertha Elizabeth Jordan Markland. Mr. Markland served in the United States Army for 21 years, having retired in 1965. He received the rank of Master Sgt. He served in World War II and the Korean Conflict. He was a prisoner of war during World War II. He was a recipient of the Silver Star in World War II. Following his retirement from service, he was employed at Holston Defense in Kingsport for five years. He was a member of Dashiell Masonic Lodge #238, VFW Post 2166, and American Legion Post 49. Mr. Markland was a member of the East Tennessee Chapter American Ex- Prisoners of War and the National Organization of the Ex-Prisoners of War. He was of the Free Will Baptist Faith. Mr. Markland was preceded in death by his wife, Wanda Clark Markland, Jan. 15, 2001, and by two sisters, Carrie Markland and Louise Deloach; and by two brothers, Harry and Floyd Markland. Survivors include one daughter, Vicki Lynn Markland, Johnson City; three sons, Randy, Ricky and Mark Markland, all of Elizabethton; one granddaughter, Mallory Markland; one sister, Janelle Nidiffer, Elizabethton; two brothers, Bob Markland, Elizabethton, and Howard Markland of Michigan. Funeral services will be conducted at 8 p.m. Monday in Memorial Funeral Chapel, with the Rev. Randy Johnson officiating. Graveside service and interment will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday, Feb. 21, 2006, in the Highland Cemetery. Pallbearers and military honors will be accorded by the Tennessee National Guard. Honorary pallbearers will be members of the East Tennessee Chapter, American Ex-Prisoners of War. The family will receive friends from 6:30-8 p.m. Monday in the funeral home. Friends may also call at the residence. Family and friends will assemble at the funeral home at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday to go to the cemetery.
