May Judge Lewis W. May, 85, 779 Circle Drive, Mountain City, passed away on Tuesday, December 12, 2006, at Mountain City Care Center following an extended illness. He was born on March 4, 1921 in Yoakum, Texas, a son of the late Mr. and Mrs. Lewis May Sr. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Jean (Conner) May, who passed away in 1998, and two brothers, Cecil May and Vernon May. Judge May was a retired Circuit Court Judge of the 1st Judicial District of Tennessee and had continued working at his private practice until his retirement in 2005. He was a former Mayor of Mountain City and was a former District Attorney for 16 years. He was a member of the Taylorsville Masonic Lodge #243 F&AM and the American Legion Post #79 and had also served for the Gideons International. He was a World War II Army Veteran and had also served in the Merchant Marines following his service in the Army. Judge May was a member of the Mountain City Presbyterian Church, where he had served as Elder and was also a former Sunday School teacher for a number of years. Judge May is survived by one son, Lewis May III, of Gray; special friends, Beverly Potter and Theona McQueen, both of Mountain City; several nieces and nephews; and many, many special friends. Funeral services for Judge May will be conducted at 7 p.m. Thursday, December 14, from the Charles B. Hux Memorial Chapel of Hux-Lipford Funeral Home with Rev. Warren Stewart and Rev. Jim Swoager officiating. Music will be under the direction of Ms. Sherry Tester and Ms. Mary Hawkins. The family will receive friends in the funeral chapel from 5 to 7 p.m. Thursday, prior to the services. Graveside services and Military Honors will be conducted at 11 a.m. Friday, December 15, at Sunset Memorial Park, Mountain City, and will be accorded by the Johnson County Honor Guard. Active pallbearers will be Thurl Potter Jr., Joe Atwood, Jim Moody, Sonny Stout and the men of Mountain City Presbyterian Church. Honorary pallbearers are Tom Grayson, Dr. Floyd Barker, Fred Phillips and 1st Judicial District Judges. Those who wish to attend the graveside services are asked to assemble at the cemetery by 10:45 a.m. Friday. Memorials may be made to World Vision, P.O.
