Mays Earl W. Mays, 80, 228 West Doe Avenue, Elizabethton, passed away Friday, March 16, 2007, at the residence of his son. Mr. Mays was born on December 31, 1926, and was a lifelong resident of Carter County. He was the son of the late John and Bina Mays. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife of 57 years, Mary Marie Teague Mays, February 16, 2002, his brothers, Henry Mays, Dale Mays and Herman Mays, and his sister, Pearl Roberts. Mr. Mays was an employee of North American Rayon Corporation for 53 years and served in the United States Navy during World War II. He loved to hunt. Survivors include a son, Wesley Mays of Unicoi; his adopted daughter, Shirley McKinney of Elizabethton; two grandchildren, Karen Walters and Clint Mays of Austin, Texas; a sister, Rada Brown of Asheboro, N.C.; a special niece and her husband, Johanna and Salvatore Palumbo of Oakton, Va.; and two nephews, Gene Bailey of Orange Park, Fla., and Jimmy Brown of Clayton, N.C. The funeral service for Mr. Mays will be conducted at 8 p.m. Sunday, March 18, in the Riverside Chapel of Tetrick Funeral Home, Elizabethton, with Chaplain Doug Hinshaw officiating. The family will receive friends in the funeral home chapel from 6 to 8 p.m. Sunday, prior to the service, and at other times at the home of his son, 2104 Upper Stone Mountain Road, Unicoi. The graveside service and interment will be at 11 a.m. Monday, March 19, in the Bell Cemetery, Unicoi. Those wishing to attend are asked to meet at the funeral home at 10 a.m. Monday to go in precession to the cemetery. Active pallbearers will be selected from family and friends. Honorary pallbearers will be Sal Palumbo, Gene Bailey, Jimmy Brown, Jason McKinney, Van Davis, Tom Smith and Lee Slagle. The family would like to express their sincere thanks to his care givers, Adventa Hospice for all their help and support, and especially to Hospice Nurse, Julie Combs.
