McCoury Mary Lou McClain McCoury, age 83, 122 Blue Grass Road, Roan Mountain, died Thursday, Sept. 1, 2005, in Johnson City Medical Center following an extended illness. A native of Carter County, she was a daughter of the late George Henry and Minnie Perkins McClain. Mrs. McCoury was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ, Newland, N.C., and was retired from North American Rayon Corporation. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Gurney McCoury, April 4, 2002, four brothers and one sister. Survivors are three sons and three daughters-in-law, the Rev. John Henry and Kathy McCoury, Minister Frank Chris and Sherry McCoury, all of Roan Mountain, and Charles and Samantha McCoury, Hampton; four grandchildren, April McCoury McKinney, John Robert "Jr." McCoury, and Chrissy LaShea McCoury Ward, all of Roan Mountain, and Misty Dawn McCoury, Hampton; two great-grandchildren, Gracee Marie McKinney and Richard Braden McCoury, both of Roan Mountain; one brother, Clyde McClain, Elk Park, N.C.; and special friends Elisha and Elwanda Garland and Virgie Brinkley, all of Roan Mountain. Several nieces and nephews also survive. The funeral service for Mrs. McCoury will be conducted at 8 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 3, in the Tetrick Funeral Home, Rhododendron Chapel, with the Rev. Finley McCoury and Minister David Atkins officiating. Music will be under the direction of Pleasant Valley Choir and Sonny Gouge and Sue Lewis, soloists. The family will receive friends from 6-8 p.m. Saturday prior to the service in the chapel or at other times at the residence, 122 Blue Grass Road, Roan Mountain. The graveside service and interment will be at 2:30 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 4, in Happy Valley Memorial Park. Those attending are asked to meet with the family at 1:30 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home chapel to go in procession to the cemetery. Active pallbearers will be Jack Johnson, Kenny Johnson, Stephen Cornett, Chris Hogan, Willie McVey and Woody Thompson. Honorary pallbearers will be Mike Gibbs and friends and neighbors.
