A native of Carter County, he was a son of the late Will and Essie Murray Morton. Mr. Morton was retired from the U.S. Forestry Service, Unicoi Station. He was of the Free Will Baptist faith. In addition to his parents, Mr. Morton was preceded in death by his first wife, Alzora McKinney Morton, and by a sister. Survivors include a daughter and son-in-law, Yvonne and Jackie McMahan of Hampton; a son, Eddie Morton of Hampton; two granddaughters, Melissa Morton of Johnson City and Angel Jones and her husband Doug of Hampton; a grandson, Jonathan Morton of Johnson City; two great-grandsons, Alex and Ian Jones of Hampton; two sisters, Ella Jay Tolley of Hampton, and Erma Lee Wright of Elizabethton; and three brothers, John Morton and Luther Morton, both of Elizabethton, and D.C. Morton of Hampton. Several nieces, nephews and cousins also survive. Funeral services for Mr. Morton will be conducted at 8 p.m. Wednesday, February 21, at Memorial Funeral Chapel with the Rev. B.F. McKinney and the Rev. Ernest Garland officiating. Graveside services and interment will be at 10 a.m. Thursday, February 22, in the McKinney Cemetery. Active pallbearers, who are requested to assemble at the funeral home at 9:20 a.m. Thursday, will be Paul Vance, Ed Chambers, George Collins, Larry Mast, Gerry Miller, Jonathan Morton, Ed Simerly and Michael Scalf. Honorary pallbearers will be all his breakfast buddies at EM's Restaurant, Conley Woodby, Dennis Woodby, Curtis Hyder, Doug Whitehead and his nephews. The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home. Friends may also call at the residence of his son or daughter.
