CARTER COUNTY, TN - OBITUARIES - Carroll R. (Mat) Mathis, 18 Oct 2003 ----¤¤¤---- Carroll R. Mathis Carroll R. (Mat) Mathis, 77, Creola Way, Johnson City, passed away on Oct. 18, 2003, at his residence following a lengthy illness. He was the son of the late Eli and Zelma Costner Mathis. Other than his parents, he was preceded in death by two brothers, Jack Mathis and Howard Mathis. He is survived by his wife of 36 years, Billie C. Barry-Mathis; one son and daughter, Charles Barry and Taryn Barry Ward and husband Walter Ward; three grandchildren, Jessica Barry, Lucas Barry and Blake Ward; two brothers, Richard Mathis, Johnson City, and Harold Mathis, Virginia Beach, Va.; two sisters Betty Jeanes, Johnson City and Barbara Tucker and husband John of Lake Isabella Calif.; a sister-in-law, Nona Mathis, of Toledo, Ohio; and caregiver and special friend Cecelia Green. Mat was an Army veteran of World War II, having served in Japan and the Philippine Islands. He was employed by the Johnson City Press as an electronic technician and retired in 1992 after 42 ears of service. Mat was a member of the Christian Church. He was a wonderful husband and father to Chuck and Taryn, whom he loved and cared for as his own. The family will receive friends from 6-8 p.m. Sunday in the chapel of Memorial Funeral Chapel, Elizabethton. A graveside service will be conducted by Dr. Robert Wetzel at 11 a.m. Monday in Monte Vista Memorial Gardens. Pallbearers, who are requested to assemble at the cemetery at 10:50 a.m. Monday, will be Lucas Barry, Blake Ward, Ray Lyons, Dean Reynolds, Jack Hall and Loyd Rogers, Friends may also call at the residence. In lieu of flowers, the family requests contributions be made to the Alzheimer's Association, N.E. Tennessee Chapter, 207 N. Boone Street, Johnson City, Tennessee. Family and friends will assemble at the cemetery at 10:50 a.m. Monday.
