CARTER COUNTY, TN - OBITUARIES - Verna Edna Norris McGuire, 1 Jul 2004 ----¤¤¤---- Mrs. Verna Edna Norris McGuire, 87, of Elizabethton, died Thursday, July 1, 2004, at Johnson City Medical Center. Mrs. McGuire was born May 22, 1917, in Watauga County, N.C., to the late John and Emma Jones Norris. She married Chester Clay "Roby" McGuire on April 28, 1934, in Heaton, N.C., and lived in Beech Mountain (Avery County) N.C., until 1972, when they moved to Elizabethton. She was a homemaker and continued to live in the home after the death of her husband in 1994. Mrs. McGuire was a member of Biltmore Baptist Church, where she was faithful as long as her health permitted. In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by four brothers and six sisters. Mrs. McGuire was a friend to many, and a loving and devoted wife, mother and grandmother. She loved growing flowers and vegetables. Survivors include two sons and one daughter-in-law, Harold and Carolyn McGuire, Huntersville, N.C., and John McGuire, Newland, N.C.; four daughters and sons-in-law, Bernice and Max McGuire, Otto, N.C., Joanne and Dale Phillips, Franklin, N.C., Mary and Allie Armstrong, Greeneville, and Betty and Richard Shomaker, Banner Elk, N.C.; 15 grandchildren; 21 great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren; four sisters-in-law, Eula Norris, Glade Springs, Va., Lura Green, Elizabethton, Vena Jones, Cranberry, N.C., and Marlene Cook, Winston-Salem, N.C.; and many special friends, neighbors, nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be conducted at 4 p.m. Sunday, July 4, at Memorial Funeral Chapel with Pastor Dale Greenwell and Pastor Mark Grubb officiating. Graveside services and interment will be at 11 a.m. Monday, July 5, at Happy Valley Memorial Park. Active pallbearers will be grandsons. Honorary pallbearers will be her Church Family, Dr. James Shipley and Staff of First Medical Group, Elizabethton, friends and neighbors. The family will receive friends from 2 to 4 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home. Friends may also call at her residence.
