(Ret.) Hoover McKinney, 69, 712 Beech Street, Elizabethton, died Tuesday, January 19, 1999, at his residence of an apparent heart attack. Mr. McKinney was a native of Carter County and a son of the late Merritt and Cinda Hyder McKinney. He was also preceded in death by a sister, Mrs. Virginia Berry, and a brother, Ethan McKinney. Mr. McKinney retired from the United States Air Force after 24 years of service. He served during the Korean War and the Vietnam Conflict. He was the owner and operator of the Antique & Curio Corner on Elk Avenue and prior to that he had operated a restaurant on East E Street. He was a member of the VFW Post #2166, Elizabethton; the Harlandale Masonic Lodge #1213, San Antonio, Texas; and the Enlisted Men's Association. He was of the Free Will Baptist Faith. Survivors include his wife, Marlene Cochran McKinney; two sons and daughters-in-law, Timothy H. and Vanissi McKinney, Johnson City, and Jerry Thomas and Susan McKinney, Fort Bragg, N.C.; three sisters, Mrs. Edith Sutton, Newport News, Va., Mrs. Pauline Hoilman, Johnson City, and Mrs. Ruth McKinney, Elizabethton; and a brother, Ben McKinney, Elizabethton. Five grandchildren also survive. Memorial Funeral Chapel is in charge of arrangements. McKINNEY -- Funeral services for Master Sgt. (Ret.) Hoover McKinney, 69, 712 Beech Street, Elizabethton, who died Tuesday, will be conducted at 2 p.m. Friday at Memorial Funeral Chapel. Interment will follow in the National Cemetery, Mountain Home. The Chaplain, Pallbearers and Honor Guard will be provided by Shaw Air Force Base, Sumpter, S.C. The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home. Friends may also call at the residence of Marlene McKinney, 906 Pine Ridge Circle, Elizabethton. Memorial Funeral Chapel is in charge of arrangements.
