McClurd Earnest C. McClurd, 74, of Carney's Point, N.J., died Friday, July 7, 2001, at the Veterans Administration Hospital, Newport, Del. Mr. McClurd was a native of Carter County and the son of the late Elbert Bert and Maggie Calhoun McClurd. He was also preceded in death by two brothers, Roy and Earl McClurd, and two sisters, Mrs. Carrie Hale and Mrs. Berniece Humphrey. Mr. McClurd was a Navy Sea Bee Veteran and served in the second World War. He retired from the U.S. Postal Service and served as vice president of McClurd Pontiac in Penns Grove. He worked as a security guard at Artificial Island and as a toll collector on the Delaware Memorial Bridge. He was also active in the local Democratic Club and the election board during retirement. Survivors include a son, Howard McClurd, Haddonfield, N.J.; a daughter, Helen McClurd Lynch, Orlando, Fla.; a son-in-law, Larry Lynch, and two grandchildren, Shena and Robert Lynch, all of Orlando, Fla.; his companion, Alice Smith, Carney's Point, N.J.; a sister, Mrs. Minnie Stone, Abington, Pa.; and a brother, Ralph McClurd, Pennsville, N.J. Several nieces and nephews also survive. Mr. McClurd will be returned to Elizabethton for interment. Tetrick Funeral Home, Riverside Chapel, (423) 543-4917, is in charge of arrangements. McClurd, 74, of Carney's Point, N.J., who died Friday, July 7, 2001, will be conducted at 2 p.m. Thursday, July 12, at Happy Valley Memorial Park with Mr. Carroll Shepard, minister of Blountville Church of Christ, officiating. A viewing for the family and friends was held at Adams Funeral Home, 18 E. Maple Avenue, Penns Grove, on Tuesday, July 10, from 7 to 9 p.m. Friends may also call at the residence of a niece, Vivian Shepard, 1369 Elizabethton Hwy., Bluff City, at any time.
