CARTER COUNTY, TN - OBITUARIES - Bynum McCoury, 1 Oct 2004 --------------¤¤¤¤¤¤-------------- Bynum McCoury, 86, formerly of U.S. Hwy. 19E, Roan Mountain, died Friday, October 1, 2004, at James H. Quillen VA Medical Center, Mountain Home, TN. Mr. McCoury was a native of Carter County and a son of the late Montie and Savannah Callahan McCoury. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife of 64 years, Mabel Louise McCoury, nine brothers, Bernie, Walter, Ira, Ernest, Homer, Ray, George, Warren and William, and three sisters, Rosie, Vernie and Lucy. Mr. McCoury was a member of Roan Mountain First Baptist Church and a member of the Roan Mountain Masonic Lodge. He was retired from the Carter County Sheriff's Department and Roan Mountain State Park. He was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II. Survivors include two sons and daughters-in-law, Harold Dean and Kathy McCoury, Marianna, Fla., and Bynum Jerry and Sherry McCoury, Roan Mountain; two daughters and one son-in-law, Shirley Dickason, Virginia Beach, Va., and Lavana and Mike Smith, Memphis; two half sisters, Bernice Stanley, Cranberry, N.C., and Kathleen Cook, Ackworth, Ga.; one half brother, J.K. McCoury, Atlanta, Ga.; 10 grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren. Several nieces and nephews also survive. The funeral service for Mr. McCoury will be conducted at 8 p.m. Monday, October 4, 2004 at the Rhododendron Chapel of Tetrick Funeral Home, Roan Mountain, with Pastor Richard Stout and Pastor Tull Oaks Jr. officiating. The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Monday at the funeral home or other times at the residence of his son, Jerry McCoury, 120 Old Rock Quarry Road, Roan Mountain. The graveside service and interment will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday, October 5, at Freeman Cemetery, Roan Mountain. Military Honors will be accorded by the Tennessee Army National Guard. Those who plan to attend the graveside service are asked to meet at the cemetery at 10:55 a.m. Tuesday. Active pallbearers will be selected from family and friends. Honorary pallbearers will be Dennis Storie, Jim Storie, Bobby McCurry, Rudy Johnson, Wayne Hagie, Dana Dean Young, Rudy Campbell, Dillard Shell, Clifton Shell, Bill Kerley, Delaney Barnett and Bob Burleson.
