CARTER COUNTY, TN - OBITUARIES - ----¤¤¤---- David V. Melton David Vance Melton, 76, 1002 DeJarnette Street, Elizabethton, died Monday, April 19, 2004, at the James H. Quillen VA Medical Center. Mr. Melton was a native of Asheville, N.C., and a son of the late Lewis and Grace McKinney Melton. He was also preceded in death by a brother, Ronnie Melton. Mr. Melton had lived a number of years in Elizabethton. He owned and operated the Elizabethton Dental Laboratory since 1950 and was a member of Roan Street Church of God. Mr. Melton served as a Carter County Commissioner for six years. In 1996, he served as a delegate to the Democratic National Convention. He was a chief judge for the Upper East Tennessee Golden Glove Boxing Association and was founder and president of the Elizabethton Optimist Club. He was a member of the Elizabethton Elks Lodge and the Captain Lynn H. Folsom VFW Post #2166. Mr. Melton was a Tennessee Colonel. He served in the United States Army during World War II. Survivors include two daughters and sons-in-law, Brenda and Stephen Keene, Elizabethton, and Lisa Kay and William E. Stanbery, Dandridge; two sons and a daughter-in-law, Steve Melton and Mike and Barbara Melton, all of Elizabethton; four sisters, Lucy Anders, High Point, N.C., Jurelle Smith, Elizabethton, Ella Mae Sluder, Weaverville, N.C., and LaVerne Todd, Claxton, Ga.; two brothers, Powell Melton, Elizabethton, and the Rev. Carroll Melton, Black Mountain, N.C.; four grandsons, Marcus W. Keene, Christopher E. Stanbery, Vance Melton and Dan Melton; and a great-granddaughter, Haley Morgan Keene. Several nieces and nephews also survive. Funeral services will be conducted at 8 p.m. Wednesday, April 21, at Memorial Funeral Chapel with the Rev. Earl Golden and the Rev. C. Lewis Melton officiating. Music will be provided by Butch Edmondson and Jerry Barnett. Graveside services and interment will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday, April 22, at Happy Valley Memorial Park. Active pallbearers will be nephews. Honorary pallbearers will be all his many friends. The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home. Friends may also call at his residence. Family and friends will assemble at the funeral home at 10:30 a.m. Thursday to go to the cemetery.
