CARTER COUNTY, TN - OBITUARIES - Samuel Blaine Merritt, 22 Oct 2002 --------------¤¤¤¤¤¤-------------- Samuel B. Merritt NORTH AUGUSTA, S.C. -- Samuel Blaine Merritt, 80, of North Augusta, died Tuesday, October 22, 2002, at his residence. Mr. Merritt was a native of Milligan, Tenn., and had resided in South Augusta for approximately 47 years prior to moving to North Augusta in 1995. Mr. Merritt was a U.S. Navy Veteran of World War II and a Naval Reservist, retiring in 1962 as a Chief Petty Officer. He continued as a Civil Service employee, serving as a Signal School Instructor at Fort Gordon until retiring in the mid-1980s with 40 plus years of service. He was a former employee of Plant Vogtle and the Rouse Company at the Augusta Mall. He was an avid Amateur Radio Operator, known as "W4SLP", and was a charter member and elder of Fleming Christian Church. Survivors include his wife of 58 years, Adelaide Merritt, North Augusta; a son and daughter-in-law, Alan and Sharon Merritt, North Augusta; three brothers, Otis Merritt, Dothan, Ala., Gordon Merritt, Johnson City, Tenn., and Wayne Merritt, Panama City, Fla.; two sisters, Verna McIntyre, Marion, Va., and Charlotte Keller, Daytona Beach, Fla.; and a granddaughter, Kellie Merritt, Augusta, Ga. Several nieces and nephews also survive. Elliott Sons Funeral Home, (706) 793-0123, is in charge of arrangements. MERRITT -- Funeral services for Samuel Blaine Merritt, 80, of North Augusta, S.C., who went home to be with the Lord on Tuesday morning, October 22, 2002, will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, October 25, at Fleming Christian Church with Mr. Marshall Bender and Mr. Gary Boyd, ministers, officiating. Interment will follow at Hillcrest Memorial Park. Pallbearers will be Deryl Owens, Billy Parham, Bobby Parham, Robert Turner, Joe Salas and Vic Reese. The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Thursday, October 24, at Elliott Sons Funeral Home, 2524 Lumpkin Road. Friends may also call at the residence of his son.
