CARTER COUNTY, TN - OBITUARIES - Landon J. (L.J.) Markland, 14 Aug 2004 ----¤¤¤---- Landon J. (L.J.) Markland, 89, Broad St., Elizabethton, died Saturday, August 14, 2004 in the Hillview Health Care Center. A native of Carter County, he was a son of the late Landon James Markland, Sr. and Arminta Rainbolt Markland. He was a graduate of the Watauga Academy. Mr. Markland was a supervisor at North American Rayon Corporation for several years. He was a retired agent for Metropolitan Life Insurance Company. He was a member and former deacon of Memorial Presbyterian Church. He was a charter member of the Betsy Squares. He was preceded in death by his wife, Amy Markland, May 17, 2004. Survivors include two daughters and sons-in-law, Jane and Lee Murray, Elizabethton, and Sarah and Bob Simerly, Murfreesboro; four grandchildren, Lisa Simerly Lowe and husband, Bill; Susan Simerly, Angelee Murray-Lee and husband, John, and Mandy Murray Lewis and husband, Matt; four great- granddaughters; two sisters, Edith Nave, Hampton, and Florence Presson, Elizabethton; one brother, Edward Markland, Crossville; several nieces and nephews and a special friend and caregiver, Janie Bowers. Graveside services will be conducted at 1:30 p.m. Tuesday, August 17, 2004 (his birthday) in the Rittertown Baptist Church Cemetery with Mr. Josh Smith, Mr. Ed Wheeler and Rev. Preston Sartelle officiating. Burial will follow the service. Active pallbearers who are requested to assemble at the cemetery at 1:25 p.m. Tuesday will be Ken Howerton, Bill Lowe, Matt Lewis, John Lee, Bill Holden, Larry Proffitt, Jim Presson, Kenneth Carden and L.B. Shatley. Honorary pallbearers will be Phil White, Jim Bishop, Carroll Broome, Fornie Peters and deacons and elders of Memorial Presbyterian Church. The family will receive friends from 7 to 8 p.m. Monday, August 16, 2004 in the funeral home. Friends may also call at the residence of a daughter and son-in-law, Jane and Lee Murray, 701 Fairway Dr., Elizabethton. To those who prefer, memorials may be made in memory of Mr. Markland to the Memorial Presbyterian Church, 100 East F. St., Elizabethton, TN 37643, or the Special Kids, Inc., 202 Arnett St., Murfreesboro, TN 37130. Family and friends will assemble at the cemetery at 1:25 p.m. Tuesday.
