CARTER COUNTY, TN - OBITUARIES - Ollie Massengill, 1 Feb 2005 ----¤¤¤---- Ollie Massengill, age 100 years, 7 months, died in her sleep Tuesday, February 1, 2005, at the home of her daughter, Edith Coefer. Mrs. Massengill was born June 28, 1904. She was a native and lifelong resident of Carter County and the daughter of the late John and Mary Elizabeth Richardson Shipley. Mrs. Massengill retired in 1969 from Nichols Manufacturing as a seamstress. At the time of her death, she was the oldest living member of Bunker Hill Christian Church where she served for many years as a Sunday School teacher. Mrs. Massengill was preceded in death by her husband of 58 years, Bill Massengill, in 1976; two sons, William Massengill, in 1919, and Raymond Massengill, in 1966; five daughters, Dollie Massengill Hardin, in 1981, and her twin Dottie, in 1922, Mary Marie Massengill Ward, in 1996, Cora Lou Massengill Murphy Hurst, in 1999, and Viola Massengill Miller Penix, in 2001; two grandsons, Randy Murphy, in 1972, and David Robert Miller, in 2004; one great-grandson, Michael Sochalski, in 2001; four brothers, Ernest Shipley, Rudy Shipley, Fred Shipley and Eldreg Shipley; and four sisters, Rena Carr, Ida Morris, Nellie Massengill and Ethel Malone. Survivors include her daughter and son-in-law, Edith and Sam Coefer, Watauga; one daughter-in-law, Mary Lou Massengill, Elizabethton; one son-in-law, James Hurst, Independence, Ky.; eight granddaughters, Carol Ann Hyder and husband Richard, Debbie Sochalski and husband Steve, and Bobbie Pierson, all of Elizabethton, Loretta Ratti and husband Vince, Fairless Hills, Pa., Gayle Jean Hurst, Independence, Ky., Sandra Simmons and husband Don, Verona, Ky., Patsy Adams and husband Chuck, Mediah, Ill., and Susan Goodson and husband Darrell, Speedway, Ind.; five grandsons, Sam Coefer Jr. and Jimmy Coefer, both of Watauga, Billy Massengill, Bristol, Gary Murphy and wife Sandra, Franklin, Tenn., and Kenny Murphy and wife Lona, Independence, Ky.; 36 great- grandchildren and 23 great-great-grandchildren. Several nieces, nephews and cousins and a multitude of "bingo buddies" also survive. A Celebration of Life service will be conducted at 7:30 p.m. Friday, February 4, in the Chapel of Peace of Tetrick Funeral Home with Mr. Ernie Depew, minister, officiating. Music will be provided by a great-granddaughter, Melinda Hyder. The graveside service and interment will be at 11 a.m. Saturday, February 5, at Morrell Cemetery. Everyone will meet at the funeral home at 10:15 a.m. Saturday to go in procession to the cemetery. The family will receive friends at the funeral home from 6 to 7:30 p.m. Friday, prior to the service, or at other times at the residence of her daughter, Edith Coefer, 2052 Bristol Highway. Active pallbearers will be grandsons and great- grandsons. Honorary pallbearer will be a special friend, Dr. Rachel Monderer, who was at her bedside when she died. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Bunker Hill Christian Church Building Fund, 490 Bunker Hill Road, Bluff City, TN 37618.
