CARTER COUNTY, TN - OBITUARIES - Virgie V. Matherly, 7 Feb 2004 ----¤¤¤---- Mrs. Virgie V. Matherly, 91, of Briemer Road, Elizabethton, died Saturday, Feb. 7, 2004, at Sycamore Shoals Hospital following an extended illness. Mrs. Matherly was a native of Vale, N.C., and a daughter of the late Isaac B. and Nancy J. Hartley Waycaster. She was a homemaker. She was a member of Roan Street Church of God. She was preceded in death by her first husband, James L. Smith, in 1938; by her second husband, Bate Matherly in 1982; by two brothers, Ted Waycaster and Dan Waycaster; by six sisters, Mattie Waycaster, Mamie Simerly, Irene Stewart, Florence Garland, Ella Deloach and Gertrude Rodgers. Survivors include three daughters and one son-in-law, Carol Ann James, Gray; Phyllis Mottern and Debby and Johnny Range, all of Elizabethton; three sons and daughters-in-law, Bobby and Carole Smith, Elizabethton, Buddy and Nancy Smith, Wilson, N.C., James and Christine Smith, Elizabethton; two sisters, Juanita Timberlake, Maryland, and Betty Payne, Hampton; four grandsons, Dr. Gary James, Gray, Todd Smith, Hampton, Jonathan Range and Jason Range, both of Elizabethton; six granddaughters, Ramona Houston, Gray, Jamie Wilson, Johnson City, Robin Mottern, Blowing Rock, N.C., Sharon Eggers, Kim Oliver and Kristy Vines, all of Elizabethton; five great-grandsons, seven great-granddaughters, and several nieces and nephews. Funeral services for Mrs. Virgie V. Matherly will be conducted at 11 a.m. Tuesday, Feb. 10, 2004, at the Roan Street Church of God with Rev. Ken Bewley and Rev. Todd Smith officiating. Music will be by family members. Interment will follow in Happy Valley Memorial Park. Active pallbearers will be Jonathan Range, Jason Range, Jearld Oliver, Jody Vines and David Houston. The family will receive friends in the Sunset Chapel of Hathaway- Percy Funeral Home from 6-8 p.m. Monday, Feb. 9, 2004. Friends may call at the residence of a son, James Smith, 132 Taylor Avenue, Elizabethton, at any time.
