CARTER COUNTY, TN - OBITUARIES - C.M. "Fig" Newton, 14 Mar 2004 ----¤¤¤---- C.M. "Fig" Newton, 80, Newton Road, Elizabethton, died Sunday, March 14, 2004 in the Sycamore Shoals Hospital. A native of Carter County, he was a son of the late Clifton Miller Newton, Sr. and Evelyn Greenway Newton. Mr. Newton retired from the Elizabethton Post Office as a rural letter carrier after 30 years of service. He was also a retired farmer. He served as a Carter County Commissioner for 10 years. While a Commissioner, he served as Chairman on the Work Release Committee, Carter County Jail and also Chairman of the Solid Waste Board. He was past president of the Farm Bureau and formerly served on the Board of Directors of the Carter County Rescue Squad. Mr. Newton was a 4-H Volunteer leader. He was a member of the Young Farmers and Homemakers of Washington County and a charter member of the Golden Rule. He was a U.S. Navy veteran of World War II and the Korean Conflict. He was a member of VFW Post #2166 and the American Legion Post 49. Mr. Newton was active in the Republican Party of Carter County. He was a member of Borderview Christian Church where he was a former Sunday School teacher. He was an avid UT football and basketball fan. He attended Milligan College. Survivors include his wife of 32 years, Kay Gentry Newton; two sisters and one brother-in-law, Charlotte Newton and Joan and Howard Bowers, all of Melbourne, Fla.; a brother-in-law and his wife, Dr. William E. Gentry and Susan Gentry, of Bethesda, Md.; two nieces, Dianna Farris and Robbye Jo Rossi; three nephews, George "Sonny" Eller; Dr. David W. Gentry and Dr. Philip A. Gentry; 13 great nieces and nephews. The funeral service will be conducted at 8 p.m. Tuesday, March 16, 2004 in Memorial Funeral Chapel with Mr. Kirk Langston, minister, and Rev. Bruce Hendrich officiating. The graveside service and burial will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, March 17, 2004 in Roselawn Memory Gardens. Music will be provided by Scott Reynolds, organist, and the Sons of the Master. Active pallbearers, who are requested to assemble at the funeral home at 10:15 a.m. Wednesday, will be Truman Clark, Clyde Chisam, Mike McNees, Mac Blevins, Raymond Isaacs, Fred Wetzel, Nat Proffitt and Allen Goodwin. Honorary pallbearers will be Dale Calhoun, Dr. James Davenport, Dr. Michelle Davenport, Jerry Byers, Murray Miles, Dennis Isaacs, Charles Burling, Mayor Dale Fair and members and former members of the Carter County Commission, retirees and present employees of the Elizabethton Post Office; employees and friends of Betty's Burger Hut; Sheriff John Henson and employees of the Carter County Sheriff's Department; members of the Carter County Rescue Squad; the nursing staff, third floor, Sycamore Shoals Hospital and the church families of Borderview Christian Church and Oak Street Baptist Church, friends and neighbors. The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday in the funeral home. To those who prefer, memorials may be made in memory of Mr. Newton to the Piano Fund, Borderview Christian Church, c/o Deborah Morton, 603 S. Riverside Drive, Elizabethton, TN 37643. Captain Lynn H. Folsom Post #2166 will conduct military graveside honors. Family and friends will assemble at the funeral home at 10:15 a.m. Wednesday to go to the cemetery.
