Oxendine Raymond R. Oxendine, 81, 208 River Road, Elizabethton, went home to be with his Lord, Wednesday, August 23, 2006, at Johnson City Medical Center following a brief illness. Mr. Oxendine was a native of Carter County and a son of the late Ed and Annie Sims Oxendine. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife of 43 years, Ruth Merritt Oxendine, who died February 12, 1993; two sisters, Wanda Kent and Annie Oxendine; two brothers, Billy Oxendine and Dan Oxendine; and a sister-in-law, Tilda Oxendine. Mr. Oxendine was of the Church of God faith. He retired from North American Rayon Corporation and was also a former employee of Memorial Funeral Chapel and Tetrick Funeral Home of Elizabethton. He was a lifetime member of the Carter County Rescue Squad. He served in the U.S. Army during World War II. He was known as a loving husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather and brother and devoted family man. He enjoyed playing with the love of his life, his great-grandson, Caleb. Survivors include a daughter and son-in-law, Judy and Ornel Burker, Elizabethton; a granddaughter and her husband, Holly and Brandon Kent, Watauga; a grandson, Jamie Jones, Johnson City; a great-grandson, Caleb Kent, Watauga; and three brothers and two sisters-in-law, Tom and Marie Oxendine and John and Christine Oxendine, all of Elizabethton, and Sam Oxendine, Cramerton, N.C. Several nieces and nephews also survive. The funeral service for Mr. Oxendine will be conducted at 8 p.m. Saturday, August 26, in the Riverside Chapel of Tetrick Funeral Home with Rev. Bobby Merritt, Rev. Billy Merritt, Rev. Sammy Oxendine and Rev. Ken Bewley officiating. Music will be under the direction of his granddaughter, Holly Kent, and Mark Weddle. The family will receive friends in the funeral home chapel from 6 to 8 p.m. Saturday, prior to the service. The committal service and interment will be at 2 p.m. Sunday, August 27, at McKinney Cemetery. Those attending are asked to meet at the funeral home at 1:15 p.m. Sunday to go in procession to the cemetery. Active pallbearers will be Greg Crowe, Maurice Graves, Johnny Merritt, Tim Burker, Ron Merritt, Don Merritt, Clay Johnson and Millard Hatfield. Honorary pallbearers will be members of the Carter County Rescue Squad, owners and employees of Tetrick Funeral Home of Elizabethton, Dr. Todd Whitaker, Herb Greer, Tony Carter and friends and neighbors.
