CARTER COUNTY, TN - OBITUARIES - Mary Smith Oliver, 30 Aug 2004 ----¤¤¤---- Mary Smith Oliver, 83, died August 30, 2004, in Heron House Nursing Home in the town of March, Cambridgeshire County in the United Kingdom. Mrs. Oliver was a native of Johnson County and the daughter of the late James Blaine and Lottie Shoun Gentry. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by two husbands, James Franklin Smith and James L. Oliver, and three brothers, Paul, Alton and Braxton Gentry. Mrs. Oliver attended Watauga Academy for two years, was a 1937 graduate of Johnson County High School, and graduated from East Tennessee State University in 1962. She taught at the Andrew Johnson Elementary School in Kingsport for three years and at Harold McCormick School in Elizabethton for 17 years, retiring in 1983. She was an active member of First Baptist Church in Elizabethton and recently, a member of First Baptist Church in Leesburg, Fla. She also loved her work at Hales Community Missions. Survivors include a daughter, Linda Smith Prior, in the United Kingdom, and two grandsons, Marc Kinza Johnson, Fort Campbell, Ky., and Alex Wayne Johnson, a junior at Rollins College in Winter Park, Fla. Memorial services will be held at First Baptist Church of Elizabethton at 3 p.m. Friday, November 26, with Rev. William Swafford and Mike Taylor officiating. Eulogy will be given by her grandson, Marc Johnson. Music will be by John Bunn, soloist, and Julie Cardwell, organist. Pallbearers will be Albert Gentry, Randy Gentry, Granger Fanning and Willie Church. Inurnment will follow at Happy Valley Memorial Park with Allen Goodwin presiding. The family will receive friends from 2 to 3 p.m. Friday at the church. Friends may also call at the residence of Randy and Patsy Tadlock, 607 Regency Lane, Elizabethton.
