CARTER COUNTY, TN - OBITUARIES - Joseph Thomas "Tom" Orton, Sr., 25 Feb 2004 ----¤¤¤---- Joseph Thomas "Tom" Orton, Sr., age 70, Gilbert Wilson Rd., Elizabethton, died Wednesday, February 25, 2004 at the Johnson City Medical Center Hospital following a brief illness. A native of Washington County, he was the son of the late Joseph M. and Rebecca Potter Orton. He was a deacon and Sunday school superintendent and member of Harbor Light Baptist Church. He was a retired employee of General Electric as a service technician. Mr. Orton was a Sergeant in the U.S. Marines. He was preceded in death by his wife, Lily Jean Fender Orton, November 1, 2003; two sons, Teddy Lee Orton, February 5, 1984, and Jerry Wayne Orton, October 28, 1962, and two brothers, Toby Orton and Bill Orton. Survivors include three daughters and sons-in-law, Debra and Gary Cole, Elizabethton; Sandra and Jimmy James, Elizabethton; Crystal and Jeff Daugherty, Johnson City; three sons and two daughters-in- law, Joseph Orton, Jr. and Jill Orton, Elizabethton; Tim and Renee Orton, Elizabethton; James Orton, Elizabethton; 20 grandchildren, and one sister, Louise Ford, of Piney Flats. Several nieces and nephews also survive. The funeral service will be conducted at 8 p.m. Saturday, February 28, 2004 at Harbor Light Baptist Church, Johnson City with Rev. Danny Quinn and Rev. Gary Deloach officiating. Music will be under the direction of Harbor Light Baptist Church Choir, his granddaughter, Rachel Cole and son-in-law, Gary Cole. The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Saturday at the church prior to the service or friends may call at the residence, 126 Gilbert Wilson Rd., Elizabethton, any time. The graveside service and burial will be conducted at 2 p.m. Sunday, February 29, 2004 at Monte Visa Burial Park, Johnson City. Military honors to be accorded by Capt. Lynn H. Folsom V.F.W. Post #2166. Active pallbearers will be grandsons, Josh James, Justin James, Joseph James, Teddy Lee Orton, J.T. Orton, Briac Daugherty, Timothy Orton and Jacob James. Honorary pallbearers will be men of Harbor Light Baptist Church and Jim Tipton. Those who plan to attend the graveside service are asked to meet at the funeral home chapel at 1 p.m. on Sunday to go in procession to the cemetery.
