Perry Dean Elwood Perry, 81, of Elizabethton, died Tuesday, October 23, 2007, at the James H. Quillen VA Medical Center Hospital. Mr. Perry was born in Elizabethton on December 5, 1925 to the late Ike and Martha Peters Perry. Mr. Perry proudly served his country as a Sergeant in the 5th Army in Italy during World War II and was recalled to active duty during the Korean War. He worked as a car salesman for numerous years, most recently at Jay Johnson Toyota of Bristol. In September of this year, he threw his own retirement party at the dealership with Frogmore Stew prepared by his friends, Doug Buckles and Paul Souder. Mr. Perry was a member of Grace Baptist Church, Elizabethton. He was active in many civic activities in the community both as a member and leader, including the Dashiell Masonic Lodge No. 238 F&AM, Shriners, American Legion Post No. 49, Civitans and the Captain Lynn H. Folsom VFW Post No. 2166. He served on the Carter County Election Commission, First Tennessee- Virginia Development District, Board of Directors for the Carter County Rescue Squad, Elizabethton City Council, Mayor of Elizabethton and Chairman of the Carter County Commission. Mr. Perry is survived by his wife of 55 years, Ella Ruth Nave Perry, of the home; a son, Thomas Perry and his wife Robbi, San Antonio, Texas; two daughters, Kim and her husband Mike Miller, Elizabethton, and Karen Perry, Johnson City; seven grandchildren, Ian and Erin Perry of Texas, Isaac, Lauren and Thomas Miller, all of Elizabethton, Andrew Presnell and his wife Amanda, Sylva, N.C., and Katie Dugger and her husband Dustin, Johnson City; his aunt, Ruby Johnson; and sisters-in-law, Ruby Bowers and Ada Nave. Several nieces, nephews, cousins and his beloved dog Freckles also survive. The funeral service for Mr. Perry will be conducted at 11 a.m. Friday, October 26, at Grace Baptist Church, Elizabethton, with Rev. Chris Hughes officiating. Interment will follow at Happy Valley Memorial Park with military honors accorded by the Captain Lynn H. Folsom VFW Post No. 2166. Active pallbearers will be Mike Miller, Mike Bowers, Ben Daniel, Ben Hays, Jay Nidiffer and grandsons, Isaac Miller, Thomas Miller and Andrew Presnell. Honorary pallbearers will be Ian Perry, Dustin Dugger, Melvin Nave, Curt Alexander, Ed Bowers, Ernie Bowers, Sid Hodge, Lawrence "Beardy" Holly, Charlie Holdren, Glen Davis, Terry Keeler, Tom Powers, Jerry Campbell, Berdell Little, Charles "Dude" LaPorte, Walter Pierce, Paul Souder, Peter Voigt, Jay Johnson, Jack Russell, Dale Morrell, Peter Hampton, David Pinckard, Senator Rusty Crowe, Congressman David Davis, Randy Lingerfelt, Joseph Little, David Little, Bob Davenport, Earl Collins, members of the American Legion Post No. 49, members of the Captain Lynn H. Folsom VFW Post No. 2166 and employees of Jay Johnson Toyota. The family will receive friends from 6 to 9 p.m. Thursday, October 25, in the Chapel of Peace of Tetrick Funeral Home, Elizabethton. Friends may also call at the residence at 101 Southgate Drive, Elizabethton, at other times. In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorial gifts be made to Honor Flight, Inc., 300 E. Auburn Avenue, Springfield, OH 45505-4703 (www.honorflight.org). This charity is dedicated to honoring WWII veterans by taking them to Washington, D.C. to visit the WWII Memorial. Mr. Perry had the opportunity to attend the grand opening of the memorial in 2004 with his son and grandson at his side.
