H. Brooks Peters Sr. Rev. H. Brooks Peters Sr., 81, 122 Arrow Drive, Elizabethton, died Saturday, February 25, 2006, at North Side Hospital, Johnson City, following a lengthy illness. Rev. Peters was a native of Carter County and a son of the late Charlie "Pap" and Lottie Hinkle Peters. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by three brothers, William "Bud" Peters, Estel Peters and Charles "June" Peters Jr., and two sisters, Ammo Shell and Bette Harms. Rev. Peters was an Ordained Baptist Minister and served as pastor of several churches in Carter, Johnson and Washington counties in Northeast Tennessee and also churches in Western North Carolina. He was currently a member and Associate Pastor of the Stoney Creek Baptist Church in Elizabethton. Brooks also was a retired representative of United Family Life Insurance Company associated with the former Lewis Gentry Funeral Home, now Hux-Lipford Funeral Home in Mountain City and Hathaway-Percy Funeral Home in Elizabethton. When he returned home from his tour of duty with the military he was employed with North American Rayon Corporation for 21 years. He was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II, having served with the 29th Division during the invasion on Omaha Beach in Normandy, France. He also fought and defended his country during battles in Northern France, Ardennes and Rhineland in the European Theatre of Operations. He is survived by his wife of 59 years, Mary Ellen Walsh Peters, of the home; two daughters and sons-in-law, Nona and Charles Steagall, Jonesborough, and Karen and Jimmy Hawkins, Lenoir City; a son, H. Brooks "Bucky" Peters Jr., Elizabethton, and a daughter-in-law, Kim Peters, Elizabethton. He is also survived by two sisters and brothers-in-law, Ruth and Calvin Wilson, Morristown, and Thelma and Cris Cristoforo, North Easton, Mass.; two granddaughters and their husbands, Melanie Steagall and David Stanton and Melissa Steagall and Jeff Jones, Johnson City; three grandsons, Tim Grindstaff, Lenoir City, Jordan Brooks Peters and Justin Peters, both of Elizabethton; two great-granddaughters, Lydia Jones and Audrey Stanton, both of Johnson City; and two great-grandsons, Austin Stanton and Evan Jones, both of Johnson City; his extended family, Trey, Brock and Chase Hawkins and Jamie Hawkins, Lenoir City; and several brothers-in-law, sisters-in-law, nieces and nephews. Funeral services for Rev. Peters will be conducted at 8 p.m. Monday, February 27, in the Chapel of Peace of Tetrick Funeral Home with Rev. Richard Estep and Rev. Bob Polk officiating. Music will be under the direction of the Walsh Family and Bob Bunton, organist. Graveside services with Military Honors will follow at 11 a.m. Tuesday, February 28, at Happy Valley Memorial Park. Honorary pallbearers will be friends and neighbors and all former and current employees of Hux-Lipford, Hathaway-Percy and Tetrick Funeral Homes. The family will receive friends from 6 until 8 p.m. Monday at the funeral home and other times at his residence, 122 Arrow Drive, Elizabethton.
