Alta V. Pierce 





    Alta Marie Hughes Vance Pierce, 87, Elizabethton, died Saturday, April 29, 

2006, in Sycamore Shoals Hospital. A native of Avery County, N.C., she was a 

daughter of the late Straley and Virgie Blackburn Hughes. She had lived most of 

her life in Elizabethton. She was a homemaker. Mrs. Pierce was a member of 

Borderview Christian Church. She was preceded in death by two husbands, Bill 

Vance and Clyde Pierce, and by four sisters and by four brothers. 





    Survivors include four daughters and three sons-in-law, Martha and Maynard 

Trivett and Belva and Harvey Tester, all of Elizabethton, Nancy and Ed Townsend 

and Billie Miller, all of Bluff City; a sister, Eula Carpenter, Newland, N.C.; 

a step-brother, Hugh Hall of North Carolina; a step-sister, Wanda Stanton of 

Virginia; eight grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; and several nieces 

and nephews. 





    Funeral services will be conducted at 5 p.m. Sunday in Memorial Funeral 

Chapel, with Mr. Rocky Mains officiating. Graveside service and interment will 

be at 11 a.m. Monday in the Hughes Cemetery, Newland, N.C., with the Rev. Hugh 

Hall officiating. Music will be provided by Alecia Holder, soloist, and Scott 

Reynolds, organist. Pallbearers will be selected from family members. The 

family will receive friends from 3-5 p.m. Sunday in the funeral home. Family 

and friends will assemble at the cemetery at 10:50 a.m. Monday. Condolences to

is in charge of the arrangements.
