Phipps James Anderson Phipps, 86, Phipps Lane, Watauga, died Thursday, May 23, 2002, in the North Side Hospital. A native of Carter County, he was a son of the late Jacob Anderson and Nona Blevins Phipps. He was preceded in death by eight brothers and sisters. Mr. Phipps was a retired electrician. He was a member of the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers Local 934, Kingsport. Mr. Phipps was a former city manager for the City of Watauga. He was a member and past master of Watauga Masonic Lodge #622. He was a member of the R.D. Keller Chapter No. 214. The B.E. Wooten Council No. 119, the Carter Commandery No. 37, Knoxville Scottish Rite and the Jericho Shrine Temple, Kingsport. He was a member of the Sycamore Chapter #163, Order of Eastern Star. He was a member of the Watauga Senior Citizens. Mr. Phipps was a member of the Brick Christian Church. Survivors include his wife, Edith Hinkle Phipps, one son, Jimmy Dean Phipps, Watauga, one brother, Brown Phipps, Watauga, two sisters Charlotte Sellers and Jessie Starnes, both of Johnson City, two grandchildren, Vincent Phipps, Watauga, and Stephanie Price, Kingston, Tenn., two great-grandchildren, Alex Price and Jamin Phipps, and several nieces and nephews. Memorial Funeral Chapel is in charge of arrangements. PHIPPS -- Funeral services for James Anderson Phipps, 86, Phipps Lane, Watauga, who died Thursday, will be conducted at 8 p.m. Friday in Memorial Funeral Chapel with Messers Jeff Campbell and Henry Reynolds, ministers, officiating. Entombment services will be conducted at 11 a.m. Saturday in the Mausoleum of Peace, Happy Valley Memorial Park. Dena Bowling, soloist, will provide the music. Active pallbearers, who are requested to assemble at the funeral home at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, will be Vince Phipps, Chris Price, Alex Price, Tim Crowe, Patrick Phipps, Allen Phipps, Wallace Phipps and Terry Cole. Honorary pallbearers will be members of Brick Christian Church and Range Community Christian Church and members of Watauga Masonic Lodge #622. Masonic services will be conducted by Watauga Lodge #622 at the Mausoleum of Peace. The family will receive friends from 6-8 p.m. Friday in the funeral home. Family and friends will assemble at the funeral home at 10:30 a.m. Saturday to go to the cemetery. Condolences may be e-mailed to the Phipps family at mfc@chartertn.net.
