CARTER COUNTY, TN - OBITUARIES - J.D. "Nub" Phillips, 12 Mar 2005 --------------¤¤¤¤¤¤-------------- J.D. "Nub" Phillips, 77, Abe Lincoln Court, Elizabethton, died Saturday, March 12, 2005, in the James H. Quillen VA Medical Center after a lengthy illness.Mr. Phillips was a native of Carter County and the son of the late George and Bertha Mae Phillips. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death six brothers, Paul, Willie, Bobby, Buck, George Jr. and Clarence "Jerry" Phillips. Mr. Phillips was a retired employee of the Elizabethton Fire Department, after working 30 years and retiring in 1989, and also worked at Hales Drug Store for 20 years. He was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II and the Korean War. He was a member of VFW Post No. 2166 and a member of Grace Baptist Church.Survivors include his wife of 46 years, Corine Buckles Phillips, and several nieces, nephews, aunts, uncles and cousins.Funeral services for Mr. Phillips will be conducted at 8 p.m. Tuesday March 15, at Memorial Funeral Chapel with Chaplain Christy Bonner and Rev. Darrell Hardin officiating. Music will be provided by Kay Collins and Christy Bonner. Graveside services will be conducted at 11 a.m. Wednesday, March 16, at Happy Valley Memorial Park with Rev. Chis Hughes officiating. Military graveside honors will be accorded by the VFW Post No. 2166. Active pallbearers, who are requested to assemble at the funeral home at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, will be Fire Chief Mike Shouse, R.L. Hambrick, Mac Merritt, Bill Carter, Clyde Watts, Bill Miller, Stacey Archer, Ronnie Hill, James Carroll and Steve Dunlap. Honorary pallbearers will be his family, his longtime friends and neighbors, and employees and former employees of the Elizabethton Fire Department. The family would like to express a special thank you to the doctors, nursing staff and employees of the VA Nursing Home. The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral chapel. Friends may also call at the residence. Family and friends will assemble at the funeral chapel at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday to go to the cemetery.
