Potter James W. "Jim" Potter, 86, 289 Highway 143, Roan Mountain, died Saturday, January 26, 2002, at Sycamore Shoals Hospital following a brief illness. Mr. Potter was a native of Carter County and the son of the late Hamilton and Zada Andrews Potter. He was also preceded in death by four sisters. Mr. Potter was a member and Elder of Elk Park Christian Church. He was retired from the Carter County School System after 44 years of service as High School Principal at the following schools: Cloudland High School, Unaka High School and Hampton High School. He was a Watauga Academy graduate and received his Master's Degree from East Tennessee State University. Mr. Potter was a former summer employee of the U.S. Forestry Department, Co-Chairman of the Miss Watauga Valley Pageant and a Charter member of the Roan Mountain Citizens Club. He was instrumental in starting the Roan Mountain Naturalist Rally and served as Tour Director. He was a World War II veteran, having served in the U.S. Navy Seabees. Survivors include his wife of 63 years, Edna VonCannon Potter, of the home; a daughter and son-in-law, Carolyn and David Williams, Surgoinsville; three granddaughters, Judith Ann Williams, Surgoinsville, Robin and spouse, Josh Vess, Dandridge, and Sonya Williams, Knoxville; and a brother, Monta Potter, N. "Jim" Potter, 86, 289 Highway 143, Roan Mountain, who died Saturday, January 26, 2002, were conducted at 8 p.m. Monday, January 28, in the Chapel of Peace of Tetrick Funeral Home with Dr. Robert Wetzel and Mr. Palma Bennett, Mr. Gerald Holly and Mr. Ed Hayes, ministers, officiating. Music was under the direction of Eric Griffith, soloist, and Gloria Holly. Graveside services and interment were conducted at 11 a.m. Tuesday, January 29, at Happy Valley Memorial Park. Active pallbearers were Charles VonCannon, Frank VonCannon, Lynn Griffith, W.O. Hampton, Jackie Peters, Bob Hensley, J.M. Heaton and Ted Hughes. Honorary pallbearers were Rowland Bailey, Harlan Ledford, Raymond Hill, Larry Proffitt, J.L. Holtsclaw, Durward Julian, Stacey Archer, Walter Stewart, Edward Morgan, George McQueen, Rudy Johnson, Jim Hughes, Kenneth Stevens, Dr. Ali Bassal, Jim Hicks, John Smith, Bud Gentry, Ken Caswell, Edward Williams, Bill Gaines, Murriel Holtsclaw, Ray Greer, Bob Burleson, Paul Wilson, I.C. Garland, Dr. Wesley Hanson, Dr. Harold Alison, Howard Hayes, Winston Church, Dr. Gary Wallace, Dallas Williams, A.B. Grindstaff, Sheriff John Henson, the men of Elk Park Christian Church, the men of Upper and Lower Shell Creek Christian Church and the following Board Members of Elk Park Christian Church: Harry McGee, Gregg Harris, Jim Erwin, William Turbyfill, Rick Winter, Charles McKnight and Larry Hicks. Everyone met at the funeral home chapel at 10:15 a.m. Tuesday to go in procession to the cemetery. The family received friends from 5 to 8 p.m. Monday in the Chapel of Peace of Tetrick Funeral Home. Friends may also call at the residence, 289 Highway 143, Roan Mountain, at any time.
