Powers KNOXVILLE -- Sidney A. Powers, 70, of Knoxville, died Wednesday, February 14, 2001. Mr. Powers was a native of Elizabethton, Tenn., and the son of Dr. Sidney O. and Frances Williams Powers, long-time owners of Taylor Drug Company on Elk Avenue, Elizabethton. He was a member of the Elizabethton High School Graduating Class of 1948. Mr. Powers received his bachelor's and master's degrees from Georgia Tech and was an Aeronautical Engineer with Boeing North American. After raduation, he was chosen by Werner Von Braun to work with him at Redstone Arsenal. He was a project manager/designer of the F-18 Fighter Plane and the X-31 Plane. He was selected for inclusion in "Who's Who in American Aviation." He was a member of Ebenezer United Methodist Church and a member of the American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics. Survivors include his wife, Rita J. Powers, Knoxville; a son, Patrick A. Powers, Palo Alto, Calif.; a daughter, Lynn F. Powers, Seattle, Wash.; two stepsons, Stephen Mairet, Placentia, Calif., and David Mairet, Duncanville, Texas; three stepdaughters, Susan Tankursley, Valercia, Calif., Jane Mairet, Waxahachie, Texas, and Nancy Rogers, Little Rock, Calif.; seven stepgrand children; a sister, Fran Powers, Knoxville; and a brother, Richard D. Powers, San Francisco, Calif. Several nieces and nephews also survive. Rose Mortuary, Knoxville, (865) 588-8578, is in charge of arrangements. POWERS -- Funeral services for Sidney A. Powers, 70, of Knoxville, who died Wednesday, February 14, 2001, will be held at 3 p.m. Sunday, February 18, at Ebenezer United Methodist Church with the Rev. Rowland Buck officiating. Family and friends will meet Monday, February 19, at Happy Valley Memorial Park in Elizabethton for a 2 p.m. interment service. The family will receive friends following the service at Ebenezer United Methodist Church. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Ebenezer United Methodist Church Building Fund, 1001 Ebenezer Road, Knoxville, Tenn. 37922, or to St. Mary's Hospice, 7447 Andersonville Pike, Knoxville, Tenn. 37938.
