A native of Carter County, she was a daughter of the late Henry Gordan and Mamie Mosley Shell and had lived most of her life in the Heaton Creek Community. Mrs. Shell was a homemaker and a member of Roan Park Baptist Church. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her first husband, Henry Johnson; a sister, Arthene Holtsclaw; and a brother, John Henry Shell. Survivors include her husband, Verl Shell; a step-daughter and her husband, Donna and Joey Hughes, Johnson City; two step-sons, Bill Shell and Ted Shell, both of Damascus, Va.; her granddaughters, Haley Hughes, Johnson City, Wendy Shell and Jessica Shell, both of Elizabethton, and Heather Presnell-Gibson, Kingsport; her grandsons, Cody Shell and Justin Shell, both of Elizabethton; and three sisters, Paulene Turbyfield, Fort McCory, Fla., Maelene Street, Roan Mountain, and Lucille Pitcher, Baltimore, Md. Several nieces and nephews also survive. Funeral services for Mrs. Shell will be conducted at 8 p.m. Thursday, October 25, at Memorial Funeral Chapel with Mr. Todd Wolfe and Rev. Cecil Largent officiating. Graveside services and interment will be at 11 a.m. Friday, October 26, at Johnson Cemetery (Crabtree Community). Active pallbearers, who are requested to assemble at the cemetery at 10:50 a.m. Friday, will be Kenneth Holtsclaw, Mike Holtsclaw, Raymond Dugger, Andrew Dugger, Adam Dugger, Dennis Street, Stacy Street and Bob Timmons. Honorary pallbearers will be Don France, W.L. Morgan, Murrell Holtsclaw, Leroy Holtsclaw, Tracy Holtsclaw, Myron Phillips and Walt Stewart. The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home. Friends may also call at the residence of her step-daughter, Donna Hughes, 915 Smalling Road, (Central Community), Johnson City. Family and friends will assemble at the cemetery at 10:50 a.m. Friday.
