Simerly Robert R. Simerly, age 89, 158 Echo Drive, Elizabethton passed away at the James H. Quillen VA Medical Center on Oct. 13, 2006, only five days before his 90th birthday, following a brief illness. A native of Elizabethton, he was born on Oct. 18, 1916, to the late John F. and Alice Headrick Simerly of the Valley Forge Community. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a sister, Ruby Potter, two brothers, Clate Simerly and Virgil Simerly, seven brothers-in-law and four sisters-in-law. Mr. Simerly was a charter member, former deacon and member of the building committee at East River Park Christian Church. He was a World War II Navy veteran who was stationed in Hawaii and had worked as a carpenter, retiring from the J. E. Green Construction Company. He was a loving husband, father and grandfather. Mr. Simerly is survived by his wife of 69 years, Ruby Smith Simerly; one daughter and son-in-law, Patsy and Ed Helfer; and one son and daughter-in-law, Rick and Sandy Simerly, all of Elizabethton, one much-loved granddaughter, Cecile Simerly; as well as one sister-in-law, Margaret Smith; one brother-in- law, Eugene Smith; and several nieces and nephews. The funeral service for Mr. Simerly will be conducted at 8 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 17, in the Tetrick Funeral Home, Riverside Chapel, with Mr. John Smith, minister, officiating. Music will be under the direction of Loretta Bowers Newton, soloist, and Charles Goodwin, pianist. The family will receive friends from 6-8 p.m. Tuesday in the chapel prior to the service. Friends may also call at the residence at other times. The committal and entombment service will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday, Oct. 18, at the Mausoleum of Peace at Happy Valley Memorial Park. Those attending will meet at the cemetery at 9:50 a.m. Wednesday. Active pallbearers will be Norman Edwards, Darrell Garrison, Danny Williams, Bill Scott and Fred Goodwin. Honorary pallbearers will be Rick Garrison, Harold "Buddy" Stewart, Charles Goodwin, Gene Smith, David Smith, Rick McKinney, Leon Simerly, Jerry Simerly, Eddie Taylor, Buddy Hyder, Jim Hyder, Rupert Range, Gary Colbaugh, Jerry Helfer and Conn Nave. Those who prefer memorials in lieu of flowers may make donations to East River Park Christian Church (Building Fund), 1207 Broad Street Ext., Elizabethton, TN 37643.
