C. Smith, 87 years of age and civil war veteran and pioneer citizen of this section, died at his home on Main street [sic] Monday, after a prolonged illness. Funeral services were held Tuesday afternoon at 2:00 o'clock with Rev. E. A. Cox pastor of the Second Baptist Church officiating. Interment was made in the Colbaugh Cemetery. The ritualistic service of the Masonic order was also used. Mr. Smith was the oldest Mason in the [county] at the time of his death, having been a Mason for 65 years. He was among the few remaining civil war veterans of this county, having served in the Federal army. Up until sometime ago, he had led an active life, and had he lived he would have celebrated his 87th birthday Wednesday. Members of the Masonic order acted as pall bearers and flower bearers. The deceased is survived by his widow, three sons, Allen, Lynn and James A. Smith, all of Elizabethton; two daughters, Mrs. Frank Gammon and Mrs. G. B. Boring, of Johnson City."
