Smith Marie Pierce Smith, 79, of Elizabethton, passed away Saturday, November 10, 2007, at Ivy Hall Nursing Home. Mrs. Smith was born on June 27, 1928, to the late Ollie C. and Lula White Pierce of Butler. Mrs. Smith was a 1948 graduate of Hampton High School and was retired from the Carter County School System where she was a cook at Valley Forge Elementary School for 22 years. She was a member of the Eastern Star, Hampton Chapter #470. She loved her church. She faithfully attended Valley Forge Free Will Baptist Church for over 50 years. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Jack R. Smith; a brother, Spencer Pierce; and four sisters, Ruby Broyles, Shirley Pierce, Lena Ward and Dorothy Lee. Survivors include a son and daughter-in-law, William Steve and Dawn Smith, Kingsport; a grandson, Nicholas Smith, Kingsport; a sister, Ethel Hinkle, Elizabethton; a brother, Haskel Pierce, Butler; and two sisters-in-law, Mary Forbes and her husband Jack and Doris Whaley, all of Elizabethton. Several nieces and nephews also survive. Funeral services for Mrs. Smith will be conducted at 7 p.m. Monday, November 12, at Memorial Funeral Chapel with the Rev. Randy Johnson officiating. Graveside services and interment will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday, November 13, at Butler Memorial Cemetery. Active pallbearers, who are requested to assemble at the cemetery at 1:55 p.m. Tuesday, will be Sam Harrison, Randy Whaley, Michael Harris, George Walter Catey, Tony Morgan and Robert Ray. The family would like to express a special "Thank You" to the staff of Ivy Hall Nursing Home, Adventa Hospice, friend Edith Watts, niece Elizabeth Whitson and neighbor Betty Lou Chambers for all their love and care shown to Mrs. Smith. The family will receive friends from 5 to 7 p.m. Monday at the funeral Home. Family and friends will assemble at the cemetery at 1:55 p.m. Tuesday. To those who prefer, memorials may be made in memory of Mrs. Smith to the Valley Forge Free Will Baptist Church Building Fund, 1503 Riverview Drive, Elizabethton, TN 37643.
