Stewart Anita Pauline Stewart, 86, 2703 Sunrise Avenue, Johnson City, died Monday, November 13, 2006, at the James H. Quillen Veterans Medical Center at Mountain Home. A native of Carter County, she had lived in New York, in Knoxville, and came to Johnson City in 1990 to make her home. She was a daughter of the late Thomas and Ina Meade Shaw Stewart and was also preceded in death by three sisters, Martha Baker, Nell Merritt and Betty Mae Stewart, and two brothers, Thomas Stewart and Mack Stewart. Mrs. Stewart was the owner and operator of the "The Huddle," a grill in Knoxville, for many years. She was a U.S. Army veteran of WW II, serving as an ambulance driver. She had been a member of Union Baptist Church in Hampton since 1934. Survivors include two brothers, James D. Stewart of Johnson City and Franklin D. Stewart of Kingsport, and two sisters, Margaret JoAnn Way of Johnson City and Marcella Sue Combs of Limestone. Several nieces and nephews also survive. The funeral service for Mrs. Stewart will be conducted at 7:30 p.m. Thursday, November 16, at Morris-Baker Funeral Home with Rev. Sonny Thomas officiating. The graveside service will be conducted at 1 p.m. Friday, November 17, in the Mountain Home National Cemetery. Full Military Honors will be accorded by the V.F.W. Post #3382 and the Tennessee National Guard. Everyone will meet at the funeral home at 12:30 p.m. Friday to go in procession to the cemetery. Honorary pallbearers will be Paul Baker and Eddie McCurry. The family will receive friends at the funeral home from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. Thursday, prior to the service. The family requests that for those who desire, memorial gifts may be made to the American Cancer Society, 508 Princeton Road, Suite 102, Johnson City, TN 37601.
