Swanner Leonard Matthew Swanner, 70, of Elizabethton, died Saturday, December 9, 2006, at Sycamore Shoals Hospital. A native of Carter County, he was a son of the late Thomas and Mary Swanner. Mr. Swanner was retired from Thomasville Furniture Company, Johnson City, and served in the United States Army during the Korean Conflict. He was of the Baptist faith. In addition to his parents, Mr. Swanner was preceded in death by a sister, Magdalene Tolley, and a great-grandson, Robert Handy Jr. Survivors include his companion of 38 years, Betty Sue Ward; two daughters, Teresa Guinn of Elizabethton and Tammy Handy of Johnson City; two sons, Larry Dean Guinn and Ricky Guinn Sr., both of Elizabethton; and four sisters, Emma Jean Morton and Olive Miller, both of Elizabethton, Ina Beatrice Meyer of Johnson City and Ethel Peters of Hickory, N.C. Eleven grandchildren, 11 great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews also survive. Funeral services for Mr. Swanner will be conducted at 8 p.m. Monday, December 11, at Memorial Funeral Chapel with the Rev. Junior McKinney and Rev. Terry Richardson officiating. Music will be provided by Shana Guinn. Graveside services and interment will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday, December 12, in the Carver- Cochran Cemetery, Hampton. Active pallbearers, who are requested to assemble at the funeral home at 10 a.m. Tuesday, will be Robert Handy, Sean Click, Larry Dishman, Larry Morton, Gilmer Tolley and Harlan Tolley. The family would like to express a special "Thank You" to Dr. Robert Walter and the Staff of the 3rd Floor of Sycamore Shoals Hospital. The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Monday at the funeral home. Friends may also call at the residence of Teresa Guinn, 912 South 2nd Street, Elizabethton, or at the residence of Larry and Mildred Morton, 150 Ken Carver Road, Unicoi.
