Sams Nat Winston Sams, 82, 902 E. Unaka Avenue, Johnson City, died Thursday, April 25, 2002, at his residence following a brief illness. Mr. Sams was a native of Carter County and had been a resident of Washington County for most of his life. He was a son of the late J.W. and Hattie Hyder Sams and was also preceded in death by six half brothers and two half sisters. Mr. Sams retired in 1999 as a filter plant operator after 25 years of service with the City of Johnson City Water Department. He was a 1939 graduate of Happy Valley High School, Elizabethton, and had attended East Tennessee State University and Johnson City Business College. He was a U.S. Navy veteran and a member of Unaka Avenue Baptist Church. Survivors include his wife, Virginia Taylor Sams; two sons and a daughter-in-law, Nathan and Kimberly Sams, Elizabethton, and Jonathan Sams, Johnson City; a granddaughter, Jessica Taylor Sams, Elizabethton; a half brother and his wife, Elmer and Pearl Sams, Elizabethton; and two brothers-in-law, James Taylor and his wife, Peggy, Salisbury, N.C., and Bill Taylor and his wife, Wanda, Elizabethton. Several nieces and nephews also survive. Appalachian Funeral Home, 800 E. Watauga Avenue, Johnson City, (423) 928-6111, is in charge of arrangements. SAMS -- Graveside funeral services for Nat Winston Sams, 82, 902 E. Unaka Avenue, Johnson City, who died Thursday, April 25, 2002, will be conducted at 11 a.m. Monday, April 29, in the Mountain Home National Cemetery with the Rev. Mike Tyson officiating. Active pallbearers will be Roy Brown and nephews, Billy Jack Taylor, David Taylor, Michael Taylor, Gene Sams, Bobby Sams and Elmer Sams Jr. Honorary pallbearers will be Gordon Cox, Mitchell Fritts, Kenneth Arnold, Junior Bailey, Mike Bailey, Butch Carpenter, Raymond Boyer, Buford Stone, Guy Buck, Haynes McKeehan and Webb Schwartz. Those planning to attend the service are to meet at the funeral home by 10:30 a.m. Monday to proceed to the cemetery.
