Mrs. Sand was a native of Roan Mountain and lived most of her life in Johnson City before moving to Kingsport in 1997. She was a daughter of the late Wilson L. and Melissa Harrell Young and was also preceded in death by her first husband, Carter King, in 1937, her second husband, David Sand, in 1973, a son, Richard E. King, and two sisters and a brother. Mrs. Sand retired in 1950 from the Federal Government where she worked with civil service in Washington, D.C. and Fort Bragg, N.C. She was a member of Cherokee United Methodist Church, Johnson City. Survivors include two sons, David Edwin Sand, Cary, N.C., and Irving Daniel Sand, Colonial Heights, and two grandsons, Jared and Logan Sand, both of Colonial Heights. Appalachian-Hartman Funeral Home, 800 E. Watauga Avenue, Johnson City, (423) 928-6111, is in charge of arrangements. SAND -- Funeral services for Mrs. Ellen Sand, 2424 East Stone Drive, Kingsport, formerly of 1514 Ashwood Drive, Johnson City, who died Tuesday, will be conducted at 8 p.m. Thursday from the East Chapel of Appalachian- Hartman Funeral Home with Rev. Mack Houston and Rev. Larry DeVault officiating. Special music will be provided by Don Squibb and Roddy Bird. Graveside committal services will be held at 2 p.m. Friday at Happy Valley Memorial Park in Elizabethton. Those planning to attend the committal services are to meet at the cemetery by 1:50 p.m. Friday. The family will receive friends from 7 to 8 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home.
