CARTER COUNTY, TN - OBITUARIES - Eulas H. Sargent Sr., 11 Apr 2005 ----¤¤¤---- Eulas H. Sargent Sr., 88, 408 H. Heaton Road, Elizabethton, died Monday, April 11, 2005, at his residence following an extended illness. Mr. Sargent was a native of Harlan, Ky., and a son of the late John and Ora Lee Eva Grindstaff Sargent. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Jessie Louise Sargent; a son, Eulas H. Sargent Jr.; two sisters, Louise Payne and Essie McGovern; and a brother, R.L. Sargent. Mr. Sargent was of the Baptist faith. He was a Carter County Deputy Sheriff and retired as a Sergeant from the U.S. Army after serving 33 years in WWII, the Korean Conflict and the Vietnam Conflict. He was a 32nd Degree Mason with Dashiell Masonic Lodge #238 F&AM, and also a member of the Jericho Shrine and of the York Rite Bodies. He was a member of the Oriental Band. Mr. Sargent was certified as the oldest active law enforcement officer in the nation with the longest term of service. Survivors include a daughter and son-in-law, Jessie Eva and Russell R. Ginnings, Johnson City; two sons and a daughter-in-law, Joseph Paul Sargent and his son Kaleb, Johnson City, and Michael Glen and Wanda Sargent, Elizabethton; two stepchildren, Frances Ernestine Johnson, of Iowa, and William Eugene Jolly and his wife Debbie, Elizabethton; 22 grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren; a brother, S.G. Sargent, Elizabethton; and two sisters, Gladys Woods and Gertrude Vaughn, both of Elizabethton. Several nieces and nephews also survive. Funeral services for Mr. Sargent will be conducted at 8 p.m. Thursday, April 14, in the Chapel of Peace of Tetrick Funeral Home, Elizabethton, with the Rev. Ronnie Campbell and the Rev. Bobby Stout officiating. Graveside services and interment will be at 10 a.m. Friday, April 15, at Mountain Home National Cemetery with full Military Honors provided. Masonic services will be accorded by Dashiell Masonic Lodge # 238 F&AM. Everyone will meet at the funeral home at 9 a.m. Friday to go in procession to the cemetery. The family will receive friends at the funeral home from 5 to 8 p.m. Thursday, prior to the service. Friends may also call at the residence at anytime. Active pallbearers will be Lowell Shell, Brent Baker, Mark Hill, Larry Burrow, Wendall Treadway and Mike Fraley. Honorary pallbearers will be Judge Lynn Brown, Judge Arden Hill, Judge Robert Cupp, Judge John Walton, Sheriff John Henson, Wayne Markland, George Skeens and Lawrence Berry.
