CARTER COUNTY, TN - OBITUARIES - Joe A. Shell, 27 Aug 2004 ----¤¤¤---- Following a lengthy battle with cancer, Joe A. Shell, loving and devoted husband, father and grandfather, went to heaven on Aug. 27, 2004, to spend eternity with the Lord. Mr. Shell was 72 years old, a native of Carter County and lived at Allen Avenue, Elizabethton. He was the son of the late Roy and Lucy Ray Shell. He was a graduate of Elizabethton High School and Steed College and served four years in the United States Navy during the Korean War. He was an employee of Sperry/Uniysis, where he retired in 1987. In 1996, he became employed with Big G Market, where he remained until 2004. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by one brother, Eugene Shell. Survivors include his wife, Brenda Ray Shell; four daughters and sons-in-law and one son and daughter-in-law, Kathy and R.C. Amidon, Becky and Bobby Vines, Debbie and Steve Peters, Tim and Jennifer Hanselman Shell and Jennifer and Tony Lawson; 11 grandchildren and two step-grandchildren, Amanda Shell, Brittany Shell, Caitlin Shell, Joshua Shell, Ashley Swafford, Lauren Swafford, Derrick Vines, Hunter Peters, Natasha Peters, Kristen Shell, Tysor Lawson, Aaron Lawson and Austin Smith, as well as six sisters-in-law and four brothers-in-law, Libby Shell, Judy and Brad AuMiller, Pat and Bill Bryant, Chris and Roger Mosley, Peggy Ray, Sue and David Cox and several nieces and nephews. Funeral services for Joe A. Shell will be held at Memorial Funeral Home in Elizabethton on Sunday, Aug. 29, 2004, at 8 p.m. The family will be receiving friends prior to the service, from 6-8 p.m. The Rev. Bruce Hendrich will be officiating, and the Rev. Bob Polk will also speak. Soloists will include Norris Shell, Mike Fleenor and Jamie Schaff. Pallbearers are as follows: Kyle Gouge, Jack Shook, Jack Nave, Jerry Stout, Lowell Shell and Kevin Nordby. Graveside services will be held on Monday, Aug. 30, 2004, at 2 p.m. Those attending should meet at Memorial Funeral Home at 1 p.m. and proceed to the Mountain Home V.A. Center in Johnson City. In lieu of flowers, please make donations to the American Cancer Society.
