CARTER COUNTY, TN - OBITUARIES - R. Bruce Shipley, 8 Dec 2002 ----¤¤¤---- R. Bruce Shipley R. Bruce Shipley, 89, 2101 Christian Lane, Apt. #706, died on Sunday, December 8, 2002 at Appalachian Christian Village. A native of Milligan, Tenn., he was the son the late William Bruce and Delia Burchfield Shipley. He received his Bachelor's of Science and Master's of Science degrees from the University of Tennessee. He married Sara Swan in 1940. Mr. Shipley was a life fellow in the Institute of Electrical and Electronic Engineers. He retired from the Tennessee Valley Authority after 31 years of service. Mr. Shipley enjoyed a second career working as a consultant for the development of power systems in Iran, Korea, and Saudi Arabia. He was known throughout the industry for his contributions to early computer applications to power systems. Because he had numerous articles published and had authored a book on power systems, Mr. Shipley was invited to speak at universities in the United States and abroad. He was a member of First Christian Church in Elizabethton, and he attended First Christian Church in Johnson City. He was a prize-winning amateur photographer and travel writer. Mr. Shipley had lived in Johnson City since 1984. He was preceded in death by a younger brother. Survivors include his loving wife of 62 years, Sara S. Shipley, Johnson City; a nephew and his wife, Lee A. and Karen Swan, of Macon, Ga.; two great nieces, Dr. Julie Swan, of Atlanta, Ga., and Jenny Swan, Athens, Ga.; loving friends, Dick and Carolyn Johnson, Elizabethton, and several cousins. Tetrick Funeral Services, 3001 Peoples Street, Johnson City, is in charge of arrangements. SHIPLEY -- A memorial service for Mr. Shipley will be held at a later date.
