Shepherd Jr. 07/13/99 Carl Newton Shepherd Jr., 73, 2073 Clairmeade Valley Road, Atlanta, Ga., died Monday, July 12, 1999, at DeKalb Medical Center following an extended illness. Mr. Shepherd was a native of Carter County and a son of the late Carl Newton Shepherd Sr. and Ocea Lea Shell Shepherd. Mr. Shepherd was a 1942 graduate of Happy Valley High School. He was also a graduate of Milligan College and received his master's degree from the University of Kentucky in 1950. He taught and coached at the Bourbon County High School in Paris, Ky., for two years. He retired from Equifax, Inc., in 1986 with 35 years of service as the Controller of the Canadian affiliate, Equifax, Inc. While with the company, he worked in Lexington, Ky., Kingsport, Tenn., and Atlanta, Ga. He was a member of the Broadway Christian Church in Lexington, Ky., and was also a member of the Toastmasters International, Civitan and the Sertoma International. He was a U.S. Navy Veteran of World War II. Survivors include his wife, Betty Rue Lawrence Shepherd, of the home; a brother, J.B. Shepherd, Elizabethton; two sisters, Frances S. Mottern and Mary Lynn S. Phillips, both of Elizabethton; two sons and daughters-in-law, David and Carolyn Ruth Shepherd and Carl Newton Shepherd III and Barbara Jean Shepherd, all of Atlanta, Ga.; two grandsons, Jon and Michael Shepherd, both of Atlanta, Ga.; two granddaughters, Jean Marie and Lauren Kay Shepherd, both of Atlanta, Ga.; and one aunt, Laura Grindstaff, Elizabethton Several nieces and nephews also survive. It was the request of Mr. Shepherd that he be cremated. A memorial service will be held at a later date in Atlanta, Ga. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the American Cancer Society, c/o Helen Wilson, 209 S. Riverside Drive, Elizabethton, Tenn. 37643.
