Mr. Simerly was a native of Carter County, Roan Mountain area, and the son of the late Earl Simerly Sr. and Alice Lyons Simerly. He was also preceded in death by a son, Bradley Dale Simerly, in 1957, and a brother, Howard Simerly. Mr. Simerly was a retired employee of Empire Furniture Company. He was a member of the Upper Gap Creek Free Will Baptist Church. Survivors include his wife, Edith Arnett Simerly, of the home; four daughters, Doris King, Judy Guinn and Jill Stanbery, all of Elizabethton, and Janie Guinn, Roan Mountain; four sons, Rev. Allen Simerly and Teddy Simerly, both of Hampton, Leroy Simerly, Hickory, N.C., and Rev. Danny Simerly, Elizabethton; seven sisters, Rebecca Livingston, Johnson City, Gladys Blevins and Anna Julian, both of Roan Mountain, Billie Birchfield, Cloverdale, Calif., Ruby Sloope and Ella Jane Simerly, both of Taylorsville, N.C., and Betty Taylor, Elizabethton; and a brother, Johnny Simerly, Taylorsville, N.C. Nineteen grandchildren, 11 great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews also survive. Tetrick Funeral Home, Riverside Chapel, is in charge of arrangements. SIMERLY -- Funeral services for Earl "Jay" Simerly, 76, 211 Willow Lane, Hampton, who died Saturday, will be conducted at 8 p.m. Monday at Tetrick Funeral Home, Riverside Chapel, with Rev. Danny Simerly and Rev. Roy Whitson officiating. Music will be under the direction of the Union Hill Free Will Baptist Church Trio. Graveside services and interment will be conducted at 11 a.m. Tuesday in the John Whitehead Cemetery, Hampton. Active pallbearers will be Claude Hart, Keith Lyons, G.W. Puckett, Glen Henegar, Darrell Guinn, Harlan Guinn, Kelly Bowers and Joe Copas. Honorary pallbearers will be men of the Upper Gap Creek Free Will Baptist Church, Roy Stanbery and John King. The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Monday at the funeral home. Friends may also call at the residence, 211 Willow Lane, Hampton, any time. The family, friends, ministers and pallbearers will meet at the cemetery at 10:55 a.m. Tuesday for the graveside services. Tetrick Funeral Home, Riverside Chapel, is in charge of arrangements.
