Simerly 2/23/00 FORT WALTON BEACH, Fla. -- George William Simerly, 86, of Fort Walton Beach, died Tuesday, February 22, 2000, at a local hospital. Mr. Simerly was born April 12, 1914 in Elizabethton, Tenn., to the late Charlie and Jeanette Simerly. He was also preceded in death by two sons, Gary and Cullie Simerly, and eight brothers and sisters. Mr. Simerly was the founder of a radio show that ran in the late 1930s and early 1940s called George Simerly and the '"'Barrel of Fun'"' in Elizabethton. He was also a Veteran of World War II before he started his career as a traveling salesman. He and his wife traveled extensively, living in 158 towns in seven states before retiring to the Fort Walton Beach area over 22 years ago. He was a member of the American Legion and Wright Baptist Church. Survivors include his wife of 42 years, Reba Simerly, Fort Walton Beach; a son, Mickey Simerly, Tucson, Ariz.; and a sister, Chole Lee, and her husband Van, Detroit, Mich. Nine grandchildren, 23 great-grandchildren, four great- great-grandchildren and numerous nieces, nephews and friends also survive. SIMERLY -- Funeral services for George William Simerly, 86, of Fort Walton Beach, Fla., who died Tuesday, February 22, 2000, will be held at 10 a.m. Friday, February 25, at Wright Baptist Church with Dr. Ronald D. Wilcoxson officiating. Interment will follow at Barrancas National Cemetery at 1:15 p.m. Friday. Friends may visit with the family Thursday evening from 5 to 7 p.m. at the funeral home. Flowers will be accepted or donations may be made to the Wright Baptist Church Building Fund in memory of George.
